Just when certain crafts are dying off, others experience a resurgence, and by that, I mean elaborate and incredibly handsome embroidery. Machines can certainly do it, but most of the runway-worthy embroidery this season fell closer in line with couture than machine-wrought designs. Embroidered options veered both Latin/Central American and Eastern European, while ethnic prints still largely tribal, were evidenced from 11th Avenue in Chelsea to Lincoln Center. See below for some of my favorite looks in this category, and also check out our other trend reports on paint, pastels, and black & white.

Marc Jacobs
Jacobs’ signature hodgepodge style of fabrications and influences has been very “more is more” over the past several years, and this season it truly comes to fruition with pieces that are as unconventional as they come, yet flow symbiotically in the world of Marc Jacobs.

From tie-dye to watercolors to straight up paint splatters and computer generated illustrations, unique, memorable fabrications have found their way onto the runways for spring 2014.

J.Crew
Here we say two extremely different looks: a beautifully orchestrated floral print on the left, and on the right, pants splattered with remnants from a fun but messy paint job. Which do you prefer for spring 2014? I thin I’m leaning toward the latter…

The Show: Sally LaPointe
The Theme: Tragic and Beautiful Simplicity; “Inspired by deli flowers, evoking an enticing sadness.”
The Color Palette: Black, White, Eggshell, Canary Yellow, Navy, Grey
The Collection’s Signature, Standout Look: Known for her stark asymmetry and clean lines, Sally LaPointe’s collections are strongly reminiscent of the Soho look, lightened this season with florals, ruffles and voluminous minis. Each model was accessorized with pointed toe heels and waist-length black or blonde wigs, echoing the geometric construction of the garments that effortlessly tied the softer feminine looks together with the square and masculine shapes of the line. An elegantly folded leather belt served as the collection’s red thread, cinching waists of the more angular pieces, and stood out along with LaPointe’s bold yet playful take on dresses and skirts.
