The Most Amazing Braid You’ll See at Fashion Week, Fall 2015 Collections

Mara Hoffman always has AMAZING beauty looks to accompany her beautiful clothing on the runway, clearly compelling her nail, makeup, and hair team to push their artistic boundaries to the max. Taking various sources of inspiration from Star Wars, this season, Catwalk by TIGI US Creative Director Thomas Osborn created a “lady Luke Skywalker,”  and with the help of some product and practice, you can get the look too!

Using CATWALK® by TIGI Session Series™ Salt Spray and the Session Series Work It Hairspray (plus some pre-braided extensions), you’ll be channeling otherworldly, powerfully boho braided hair in no time! See below for the how-to steps:

  1. Begin by spritzing CATWALK by TIGI Session Series™ Salt Spray all over and make a center part from the hairline to the nape, sectioning the hair into two low ponytails.
  2. Using a flat brush and a bit of CATWALK by TIGI Session Series Work It Hairspray, smooth hair down and lock in the center part.
  3. With hair pins, secure the pre-made extension braid just behind the ear and cross over the crown. Repeat with a second pre-made braid in the opposite direction, crossing over the other braid to create an “X” formation on the head.
  4. Next, take out the ponytail elastics and start braiding the ends of the braids into each ponytail, using the traditional three-strand technique and adding in additional pieces of hair into the braid as you move down the hair length.
  5. Finish each side with an elastic, leaving a significant amount of un-braided hair below the elastic.
  6. Bring the two braids together, taking care to hide the pins and create the intertwined braids.
  7. Use fingers to gently tug out pieces of the braid to create an undone slightly lived-in look and finalize it with CATWALK by TIGI Session Series Work It Hairspray.

The good news about what you can expect for fall 2015 when it comes to hair, nails, and makeup is that most looks revolve around things you’ve already seen before, just a bit tweaked, enhanced, and updated, that’s all! Follow along as I walk you through the trends, with some standout looks that epitomize them, which also happen to be my favorites, created by the artists behind renowned brands such as essie, Zoya, NARS, Maybelline, Davines, TRESemmé, and more. There are a total of 12 trends across the beauty categories that I just had to include in this feature; which is your favorite?

Tamara de Lempicka as Divine Makeup Inspiration at Naeem Khan

Some fashion week makeup looks are fully-deserving of their own feature, and for Naeem Khan‘s 10th anniversary, James Boehmer for NARS Cosmetics created one well-worthy of the celebration. Dark, sensual and glamorous was the direction given to Boehmer for the makeup, in order to augment the intricate beading, crystal, feathers, and other rich embellishment and black and white graphic looks found in the collection.

“There’s always a classic Hollywood element to Naeem’s collection, so we knew we wanted to do a lip focus, but I also wanted to do a smokey eye that didn’t feel like a typical one,” Boehmer shares. “It (the collection) has a ’20s/’30s vibe, so I automatically thought of artist Tamara de Lempicka, and what I love of is that the women in her paintings still feel very modern today, and if they came to life, they would seem like really modern, cool girls.” Boehmer blended two eye shadow colors to work on a variety of skin tones, and leave a shadow effect, as if there was Hollywood-style lighting on the face, blending the color up to the brows.He left out the mascara and didn’t emphasize eyebrows to soften the look.

On the lip, he created the deep blood red, chocolate matte lip with no shine, as inspired by de Lempicka’s paintings by starting with a lip liner, then a lip pencil, and then again going back in with the lighter color lip liner color on the very top. Skin was kept very clean,  powdered down the center of the face and last used Rosebud salve on the outer edges, “above and below the eye makeup to create definition and light on the runway.”

Zoya’s New Collections: Naturel Satins & Delight

I feel like I infrequently fully endorse a collection, however nail polish shades have been incredibly on point lately, making me want to re-paint my digits every.single.night. The only person who I will contemplate sharing the new Zoya Natural Satins line with is my mom, as quite possibly, she’s a bigger Zoya fan than I, and even then, I reluctantly share it with her. It’s that good! devised in a softened palette with a finish between a matte and a glossy look, the collection was created to transition between winter and spring seasons, and it does it with aplomb. I’m hooked on Sage and Tove, a murky, moody green and grey, respectively, but all of the colors can be both day and night appropriate.

The Delight collection from Zoya adds a punch of sparkly effervescence to your nails with metallic sheen or creamy medium-opaque pastels in lightweight formulas that let you produce a sheer strip of color, or layer it up for an assertive effect. I’m digging the creamier iterations of this collection (there are three of each), but I can see the more sparkly effects right at home for a girls weekend away or on the weekend.
