Silhouettes from the 80’s continue to prove themselves to be de rigueur for the upcoming Fall/Winter 2017 season, as proven recently at London Fashion Week. Amid styles like off-the-shoulder and one-shouldered tops, eccentric prints, and vibrant colors, was the comeback of the statement sleeve. From tiered and bell-shaped to puffed or trumpet in volume, the sleeve has been the ultimate daring component on the runway. Designers like Antonio Berardi, Ashley Williams, and Peter Pilotto all said goodbye to the slim sleeve for a handful of looks in each of their respective collections.
Natalia Alaverdian of A.W.A.K.E. showed extra voluminous sleeves in her otherwise minimalist collection inspired by the octopus, while Edeline Lee included a dramatic tiered, elongated version. Lee’s collection drew inspiration from artist Hannah Höch, and based the innovative sleeve construction on Höch’s collage technique. Huishan Zhang also showed a tiered sleeve in his ultra-feminine collection, utilizing fabrics like black lace and organza.

We went deep sea diving with Peter Pilotto’s scuba diving-inspired Fall 2012 RTW collection, as the colors were a true inspiration consisting of beautiful sea greens, yellows, and blues. Such colors complemented the mix of various prints in a cool, fun way and sexy cutouts were an essential part of classic and feminine silhouettes. With rich colors, came luxe textiles in velvet and fur, layer upon layer. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, flirty peplums and intricate embellishments added a warmer feel to such assertive prints. Go ahead and wear Peter Pilotto’s collection with the confidence that you already possess!
