Combat Boots Get a Casual and Feminine Update

by Julia DiNardo

Anyone can top off an outfit with sleek and sexy high heels or fun and flirty ballet flats and pull together a stylish look. It takes someone with a certain amount of fashion chutzpah to achieve the same feat with a sneaker. For decades, Dr. Martens Boots have been embraced by members of various subcultures as they attempt to subvert style norms. But now, the especially fashion-forward have embraced this classic clunky combat-style shoe and have elevated it to high fashion. As a result, Dr. Martens are maybe more visible now than ever before in their long history. Here are a few of the styles that are currently making a major splash.

Women’s Shoreditch High-Top Sneaker

The black canvas Shoreditch High-Top Sneaker by Dr. Martens has all the fierce fearlessness of a traditional combat boot, and yet it’s been embraced by the fashion elite. Avante garde fashion icon Gwen Stefani has paired a similar style with black leggings, a boldly chunky sweater, and an abstract patterned scarf for an edgy look with a surprising undercurrent of elegance. This comfortable sneaker would complement her look even further by allowing her to easily keep up with her two young sons without sacrificing her style.

Women’s Shoreditch Victorian Flowers High-Top Sneaker

In the 1990’s, it wasn’t uncommon for young women to experiment with fashion by pairing chunky boots or sneakers with uber-feminine flowery babydoll dresses. The Dr. Marten Women’s Shoreditch High-Top Sneaker with Victorian Flowers brings together the best of both worlds by contrasting a lush floral pattern against a stark black canvas background. Actress Emma Watson recently starred in The Perks of Being A Wallflower, a film about offbeat teenagers in the early nineties. Since then, perhaps influenced by her character’s fashion choices, she’s been photographed wearing Dr. Martens shoes. This particular shoe would perfectly complement Watson’s feminine but edgy style.

Women’s Shoreditch Pink Flowers Canvas Sneaker

There’s no rule that says a sturdy shoe can’t also be whimsical and super-girly. The Women’s Shoreditch Pink Flowers Canvas Sneaker by Dr. Martens is hyperfeminine with its pale pink background and intricate floral design even as it retains the sturdy structure and clunky lines that are a hallmark of the Dr. Martens brand. Fashion models Daisy Lowe and Agyness Deyn (both Dr. Martens devotees) are known for their edgy styles which often embrace the sharp divide between traditionally masculine and feminine styles. Either one of them would rock this aggressively girly style.

If you’re ready to push your fashion boundaries, there’s no better starting point than incorporating Dr. Marten’s into your wardrobe. Whether you’re into basic black or feminine florals, these boots will give you the edge you need to punch up your personal style.

The Latest Collections: WeSC, Dr. Martens, Rousseau, Incase, More

by FashionPulseAlana

We attended a bevy of spring 2012 collections, bringing forth our most favorite brands and products with the most amazing items for the upcoming season to FPD’s readers. Check out the roundups below, and enjoy!

WeSC (WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy):

WeSC was founded in 1999 in Stockholm, Sweden. From then until now, WeSC has become a culmination of dynamic people, often activists, and the apparel holds on to that spirit with it’s washed out crop tops, chambray, and funky bathing suits. With a semi-skater appeal, the tees, sweats, and denim are perfect to hang out, chill, and have a good time in.

Delphine Charlotte

“A woman on the rise to power” inspired jewelry designer Delphine Charlotte to create her SS12 line of costume jewelry. Half art-deco, half Hollywood glam, the collection includes rhinestones, pearls, circles, cages and more!  The necklaces are the standout pieces for FPD.

Dr. Martens

The now classic Dr. Martens shoes, especially boots for spring show  a lot of crocodile, monochrome (my personal favorite) and bright neon hues. Apparel holds on to the same history of innovative youth culture: embrace being an individual.

Duvetica

Despite the fact that the line is for SS12, each piece of outerwear has at least 5% down. Great for traveling, many of these jackets can fit into a small pouch zipped into the jacket itself. So fun-ctional!

Jerome C. Rousseau

Yet again, Rousseau has crafted incredibly distinctive shoes, heels, and flats meant for the girl who is not afraid to be admired (ie: Siobhan Fahey). The coral suede platform with platinum leather is certainly one of the standouts from the spring season’s collection. Modern art, pop culture, European design and nightlife are just some of Rousseau’s many muses. There are jewels, glitter, ribbons, mesh, ostrich, cheetah… need I say more?

Incase

If you’re reading this blog, you very well know the value of technology in our modern, demanding, hectic live over here at FPD. We can thank brands like Incase for always creating reliable products (covers, backpacks, cases and sleeves) to protect and enhance our Apple gadgets. I’m particularly glad to see the company continuing with the Andy Warhol collaboration, a man who understood contemporary culture well (and a native of our editor Julia’s hometown, Pittsburgh!). Fashion, meet functionality.

What FPD Has Been Up to Lately

by Julia DiNardo

American Living for JCPenney Holiday Preview

The American Living for JCPenney Holiday collection just hit stores, and has some terrific pieces that function for all occasions! I was loving the Navajo sweater, ruffled skirts, and frilly tops. There’s also a perfect assortment for men and children. Plus, at JCPenney, the price is always just right – items are already marked 30% off!

Payless Holiday Collection and Spring 2011 Preview

The designer assortment just keeps getting better and better, and for Spring 2011 there are a TON of great choices from both Payless’ designer (Lela Rose, Isabel Toledo, Christian Siriano) and other labels (Zoe & Zac, American Eagle, Dexter). Expect some great comfort technology, must-have styles, accessories, and even the expansion of beauty products. You can shop the holiday collection now, and I was lucky enough to get a pair of the amazing Isabel Toledo Bow Dress Shoes.

Avon Anew Platinum Luncheon

A lovely lunch at A Voce, Columbus Circle with the face of Avon Platinum, actress Jacqueline Bisset, was my intro to Avon’s Anew Platinum Serum and Night Cream. The product use Avon’s first-ever patented Paxillium Technology , in which you will see results after two weeks. Geared toward women 60 plus, working on deep wrinkles and promises to dramatically reduce the look of those pesky lines. Shop Avon to by both of these products together to save some money, and the line also plans to include eye and lip cream, cleanser, and day cream with SPF 25.

Dr. Martens NYC Store Opening

The middle school-er inside of me died and went to heaven once I stepped inside the brand new Dr. Martens Store at 148 Spring Street in SoHo last night. I remember saving my allowance for months to own a pair, eventually amassing a collection of eight pairs (now, only one from the original ‘collection’ remains). Back to the store: so many great styles to choose from, especially a selection that look nothing like the classic ’8-lace’ boots! I was loving the chunky heels, fleece lined, and fluero-hued varieties.

The Doc (Marten) Will See You Now (CollegeCandy Guest Post)

by fashionpulse

Via our friends at CollegeCandy.com

After perusing the style sections of some of my favorite magazines and websites, I’ve discovered something horrifying. Well, besides the price tags next to my favorite items.

Much to my dismay, DOC MARTENS are back.

Yes, I’m serious. Everyone from the editors at Marie Claire to the designers showing their wears at NYFW are toting Docs as the biggest fashion “Do” this season.

I don’t know if I’m alone here, but the only time I’ve ever briefly considered these to be cool (after CDs were invented, at least) was when I saw Sienna Miller rock them in Nylon Magazine.  But come on; she’s also wearing a tutu and trying to lick her foot. She’s obvi the only (and I do mean ONLY) person who can pull that off.

Why would this pedophile-in-a-trenchcoat footwear make a comeback ever again in 2010? Why do things like this even MAKE comebacks? Is there a fashion-comeback god that just decides to bring certain (bad) trends back? Wasn’t there a reason they, like shoulder pads, went out of style in the first place?

Not only are Doc Martens back, but they’re back with a bang. As in, team-up-with-a-hot-designer bang.  That’s right,Jean Paul Gaultier has designed his own line of the boots (whyyyyy!?!?!?!). And for a wild night on the town, don’t forget to pick up some shiny, metallic, star-printed, or patent leather boots.  Or mary-janes. Or heeled boots? I mean really, would anyone spend $130.00 on a pair of eyesores like that?

I realize that Uggs, gladiator heels and Sperry’s have been around for a while and it’s definitely time for a new trend in footwear. But I’d rather wear my torn up and stinky Uggs than tuck my skinnies into a pair of these.
