Classic Pieces Take the Lead

It seems that from this point until about mid-March, you may not see my personal style without a jacket and/or cold weather accessory in the shot, with a sprinkling of precipitation for extra measure! Lots of warm, wool layers are a must, with thick, nubby socks crammed into boots and as many long sleeves as I can wear without looking too bulky on top. My best friend got me this sweater for Christmas, and it is just absolutely perfect in every way; I’m one of the most difficult people to shop for, and she pretty much nails it every time! She anticipated that I would fancy it up with accessories, so Jamie, this one’s for you!

I’m feeling like dressing a bit more paired down for 2015, revisiting some classic silhouettes anew, like this 8-lace Dr. Martens and a vintage (from 1992) Louis Vuitton Epi Noe Bowler Bag, which came into popularity right around the time the aforementioned “Docs” were on the rise — could two styles ever be so different? In the 1990s, pairing these together wouldn’t have worked, but today, the mixing of styles, decades, and high and low brans is au curant as it will ever be. My jacket harks back to another time as well, 2002, and can’t believe I’ve had it with me through all of my apartment moves and style changes; classic pieces have the potential to take the style lead and see you through life’s changes.

Basics with Bravado

Century 21 for the Holidays

It’s practically a rite of passage to introduce new New Yorkers and visitors to Century 21 ––   a department store chock-full of designer brands with savings of 40%-65% off retail prices. You can easily master your holiday shopping list here, fooling everyone into thinking you spent top dollar on designer labels! Plus, one of my favorite aspects are the super-accommodating hours: depending on the location, the store opens as early as 7:45am, and can be open as late as 11pm!

On a recent visit, I discovered  merch from some brands I was quite pleasantly surprised to see, including Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Valentino, Cole Haan, and Matt & Nat. There was even a section in the front of the store with little knick knacks perfect for stocking stuffers and “back-up gifts” — you know the kind; when someone surprises you with a gift you didn’t expect, and need something versatile to have on hand, just in case of this! Just like any other department store, they’ve got all the main categories covered, from cosmetics to men’s and women’s apparel, home, footwear, and more.  Check Century 21‘s website for a store nearest you — there’s locations in Manhattan, New Jersey, Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.
