Some key trends from New York and London carried over into Milan Fashion Week, while others were being seen for the first time on the runway this season. These newer trends though, introduced by Italian brands, were just as bold and statement-making as their predecessors. One major trend for spring 2018 in both clothing and accessories is the use of feathers. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Erika Cavallini all debuted feather-detailed pieces in their latest collections.
Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio of Attico utilized feathers in the form of a cream colored handbag that accompanied the styling in their retro-inspired collection. On the bolder side of things, Jeremy Scott of Moschino opened his show with an extra-voluminous tulle tutu coated in pastel blue feathers.Dolce and Gabbana‘s elaborate spring 2018 show, with a theme described as “Queen of Hearts,” included a multi-colored coat completely canvassed in feathers.

As fashion month nears its end, the main statements made from designers this season are becoming increasingly evident. Daring trends and statement pieces have taken over the runways this Milan Fashion Week, and with that comes the use of sheer fabrics. The style is not particularly new, but designers have reinvented the bold look that will surely be everywhere this upcoming fall season. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Giorgio Armani all chose to include totally sheer pieces in their collections, each with an individual xtwist.
Alberta Ferretti showed sheer black pieces in her truly feminine collection inspired by Venice, while Arthur Arbesser included layered looks with transparent skirts, inspired by Berlin in the 1980’s. Anna Molinari of Blumarine stuck to the traditional look of the brand, exuding elegance with luxurious furs, chiffon gowns, and floral detailing. She showed sheer detailed dresses with black lace and fur collars.

In an astonishing collection of 24 pieces, Alberta Ferretti for Impulse (at Macy’s), a limited edition capsule collection, is as ladylike as it is sensual. The light, summer clothing is designed for the strong, seductive woman as evidenced in the ad campaign. The ads feature an Italian woman against the stunning backdrop of Positano. Bohemian flairs are coupled with garden party fashions, heavily influenced by Ferretti’s Italian heritage.
Oranges, pinks, and teals are offset by more refined whites and tans, with the standout pieces certainly being the dresses. Whether you prefer maxi or mini, you’ll vibe with the beautiful options, and perhaps even struggle to pick one.

I stopped by the VIP hospitality tent on Madison Avenue & 63rd to get my bearings and meet some of the Italian Trade Commission staff and enthusiasts. A stop in Geox proved that shoes truly can be comfortable and stylish after all, for men, women, and children, while Tincati Milano played to the sleek, sophisticated tailored clothing desires, offering their biggest discount ever of 30% off. A handsome gentleman with a healthy pour handed me a perfect glass of prosecco in Etro, while I left nose marks on the glass after oohing and ahhing over the jewelry, handbags, and accessories. Last I took in Furla for some of the best leather bags around, and Brics for an original approach to luggage. Although I was geographically planted on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the vibe was nothing other than hospitably Italian.
