Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: Kate Wilkoff’s Futuristic Fringe
Supima Cotton hosted the 5th annual Design Competition at Lincoln Center on Sept 6th, with Rachel Zoe as the host and an army of fashion’s elite judging the competition, including designer Tadashi Shoji and Gilt Group founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson.
The contestants: Abigail Glass, a recent RISD grad, kicked off the show with plunging necklines in sunny hues with a mature-Miami vibe. Kyle Pearson from FIT showed a lesson in pleats with leather cummerbund-wrapped dresses in coral and lime hues. Natalia Yepes from SCAD showed crystal-embellished cotton gowns in sherbet-colored cotton. Jacqueline Siefert from RISD showed organza pieces in two-tone palettes. Meredith Lyon from Pratt showed a flowing jersey piece with tribal print accents. Lyon’s designs had an effortless quality that felt wearable and of-the-moment. Yvonne Luong from FIT incorporated a sculptural element in her runway looks that showed a mastery of technique and a fantastic under-the-sea vibe.
Kate Wilkoff from Pratt followed wit her futuristic Fifth Element figure-flattering dresses. Textured layer upon layer was collaged together to form beautiful shapes that contoured to the female silhouette. Each piece was bleached and dyed in a beautiful array of ochre and mustard colors. Eduardo Calvo finished the show with deep burgundy gowns in dramatic silhouettes, including a lively scrunched collar jersey gown with a plunging neckline and full-length hem. Kate Wilkoff stole the show and won the $10,000 grand prize for her futuristic gowns, made from Supima. Congratulations Kate from the FPD team!
