Bright lips, re-worked French manicures, and the ultimate “lived in” hair look, were the most popular beauty looks from the runway for spring 2017, with an overall 70s meets 90s vibe. See below for an explanation of each and our favorite looks of the week.
Electric Lips:
It’s an unapologetic saturation of a vibrant hue, slashed across the lips in the most pumped up shades you can imagine.

’70s Slick & Bohemian Hair:
A mashup of ’70s looks was ever-present on the runway this season, at times looking polished, and at others, more bohemian than ever. The indisputable key product was sea salt texturizing spray, with hairspray never too far behind.

Thomas Osborn for CATWALK by TIGI at Jonathan Simkhai worked the desert drifter look, creating “texture that wasn’t too polished,” made more whimsical with a hair wrap thread, with some models also wearing beads in tiny sections of the hair for a modern interpretation. The star product here: CATWALK by TIGI Texturising Salt Spray.
Likewise, TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu worked with the “gypsetter” theme in the spirit of travel for Rebecca Minkoff with the ultimate boho-inspired tousled waves. The star product: TRESemmé Perfectly (un)Done Wave Creation Sea Foam applied to damp hair to enhance texture (see image below for the look).
Color Blocked Nails & Opaque Nails:
It’s less about over-the-top nail art this season, and more about a deliberate, yet very subtle change in design, be it a “negative space” or color-blocked manicure, or just a great saturation of one strong hue on all digits. Several shows had two to four colors used, each one meant to coordinate with a specific model’s look.
An alternating color twist on the French manicure, Michelle Saunders for essie created the look at Rebecca Minkoff by using two of essie’s Fall 2016 shades, Makie Me Happy and Go Go Geisha! Just like Minkoff’s collection is “see-now, buy-now,” you can luckily do the same with the polish! Star product: Finishing the look with essie’s gel.setter top coat…and having some clear tape at your disposal to create the lines!
Backstage at Tibi, lead manicurist Jin Soon Choi for JINsoon worked to unite the finer details and broad themes in the collection with an array of utilitarian, gorgeous shades (two available now (Dolly Pink and Demure), with three (the blue, orange, and grey) available in February). Star product: That yet-to-be-named orange shade -it’s sure to be a hit, come spring!
Julie Kandalec for essie at Rag & Bone created the perfect red for the collection by layering two existing collection shades, while brand classics such as sand tropez and licorice were also painted onto models nails to coordinate with looks. Star Product: Your ingenuity! Play around with layering your own favorite essie polishes for a cool, custom nail look.
