Closet Clean-Out: What to Do with Your Unwanted Fashion

A cramped closet is bad for your clothes (never squish your fashion) and the hardware from where you hang them. I knew it was time for a closet clean out when the rods in my closet started to bow. So I purged my closet and gathered bags and bags of unwanted fashion to donate to Goodwill.

Now for this round of donations, Goodwill is my charity of choice. However, there are actually many options for you when it comes to your closet clean out. If you’re ready to purge, here are some ideas of what you can do with your unwanted fashion.

1. Donate it. Check your city for charitable thrift shops, such as Goodwill, who will gladly take your donated apparel, shoes and accessories. In turn, they sell these items and use the money toward programs that the charity provides for those in need. There are also charities, such as women’s shelters and Dress for Success, who give your items directly to the people who need it right away. Go on Facebook and ask your trusted friends who they donate their unwanted fashion to, and start there. Important note: GET A RECEIPT! Your donated items count as a tax write-off.

2. Sell it. If your fashion is current and in great condition, try making a buck or two by selling it on eBay or to a used clothing store like Buffalo Exchange. If you’ve never sold anything on eBay before, it can be an intimidating experience. I highly recommend going through eBay’s tutorials and learning how to do it first. I prefer selling directly to Buffalo Exchange. Rather than take the cash, I always go with credit (which often amounts to more than the offered cash) because then I can just buy myself something new and cute. Another selling option?
