Milan Fashion Week SS12: Gucci, Versace, Bottega Veneta

Gucci
As Gucci celebrates its 90th birthday, the SS12 collection ushers in a welll-maintained, clean silhouette with a primarily black palette. Androgynous lines yielded boxy jackets and high-waisted pants, yet a bright turoise-green hue kept it more feminine. In addition, there was an incredible throwback to the flapper-era with flirty retro dresses. While not as luxe as the Fall 2011 collection, Frida Giannini ensured her design prowess in the architectural shapes and her expertise with leather and embroidery that any woman can appreciate and dutifully wear.

Versace

Picture mermaid meets rock star meets Greek goddess and you’ve got Versace for Spring 2012.  Underwater motifs with seashells, seahorses and starfish were shown in light shades of mint green, lavender, and dove grey. Gold studs covered bodices and skirts or embellished belts to accentuate the waist. There is nothing more crisp than a white suit, and nothing more “Donatella” than a green mini dress or Lucite platforms. Clean, sexy, and sophisticated, Versace knows how to dress a red carpet siren.  With Versace for H&M set to hit stores in November, we can all get a portion of that glowing star quality soon!

Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta’s spring collection was as opulent as it was bright (deep violet, blood red, chocolate, and emerald); not to mention the array of incredible handbags, in ostrich, lizard and crocodile.  Drawing on both the references of technology and handicrafts, Tomas Maier matched urban crewnecks with pleated skirts and leather jackets with long, fringed scarves.  The collection ended on a high note with a rainbow of dresses and gowns folded intricately with mesh and chiffon encouraging second and third glances.

Step Lively in a Pair of Color Blocked Pumps (thefind Guest Post)

Apparently this season’s shoe outlook is that solids are overrated, so why not embrace some funky layered hues with a pair of color blocked pumps? American Living for JCPenney: Jackets for Fall

The cool, crisp fall days are beginning to call for some light layering. American Living’s latest fall styles, sold exclusively at JCPenney, are as practical as they are cute. While the collection includes dresses, skirts, pants and more, the outerwear is especially trendy. A classic cardigan will always come in handy when in the office or out at night. For a more edgy look, try a cropped motorcycle jacket or a utilitarian cargo jacket, both pictured here (and a few of our faves!). You don’t have to break the bank to look high fashion!

The New York Fashion Week Team’s Top Spring 2012 Trends

Tribal

This season, the tribal trend was an easy one to spot, thanks to its brown, orange, cream, and black color palette, canvas and raffia fabrics, braiding, and darker beading. We loved the pieces that represented the trend at Proenza Schouler (pictured above), as well as at Herve Leger, Donna Karan, and even at Diane von Furstenberg. You can start to take steps toward the trend by incorporating it into your look now via an accessory; a handbag, a pair of earrings or necklace, or shoes.

Blue

Among the most favored trends of this year’s SS12 season is the primary color blue. The gorgeous hue stood strong as a solid, complimented a multitude of prints, and popped up on nails. A royal blue flower petal print seduced at Jason Wu, while Marc Jacobs welcomed various blues into his layer-heavy collection. Daring blue midnight sapphire nails appeared more than once at 3.1 Philip Lim, Jen Kao, and Sachin & Babi. Yet, if I had to choose one shade, I’d suggest sticking with the classic, yet contemporary navy. Take a cue from both the Tory Burch and Rag + Bone runway collections on mixing navy with orange, with white or with other shades of blue. Let’s just say blue is “cool” in more ways than one for spring!

The Peplum

Peplum accents are all the rage on the Spring 2012 runway for New York Fashion Week. This glamourous addition come in any size or fullness, giving a fun adornment to a solid color. With a peplum, it feels as though your outfit came with a built-in accessory, as the beautiful ruffle adds a personality of its own. The trend was seen on various runways this season, such as Jason Wu, Badgley Mischka, and Vera Wang. Cynthia Rowley went for a bolder statement. with peplums found in vibrant prints, paired with tailored pants gave a rock and roll vibe on the runway.
