At London Fashion Week, the oversized trend was going strong in both clothing and accessories. Among the most notable of pieces was the oversized tote, which was featured in collections like Ashish, Richard Malone, and Eudon Choi. Ashish was inspired in part by Indian street style, and featured models carrying brightly colored, grocery-worthy bags. At Rejina Pyo, the collection included modern style elements that were mixed with a touch of nostalgia, complete with oversized, leather totes in a muted color palette. At Richard Malone, the sustainable collection featured oversized, mesh tote bags, which were all hand-woven and made entirely from recycled plastic.

The 80’s have seemingly been this season’s biggest trend, as elements from the decade have popped up in every city throughout fashion month. In New York, color seemed to play the biggest role on the runway, and many designers like Marc Jacobs, Carolina Herrera, and Adam Selman opted for vibrant, 80’s inspired hues as opposed to subtle neutrals. At Tibi, a collection inspired by cities and architecture, featured bright orange, yellow, and blue, all in oversized, relaxed silhouettes. Jeremy Scott, who is often influenced by the 80’s decade, showed a sci-fi inspired collection featuring tracksuits, neon accessories, and puffer jackets in bold colors and metallic finishes.

For Spring 2018, bags are truly coming in all shapes and sizes. Most prevalent of these on the most recent Spring 2018 runways is the circle bag, as many designers opted for unique silhouettes rather than classic styles. Featured in shows like Anya Hindmarch, Balmain, Christian Siriano, and Dolce & Gabbana, this style came complete in bold colors with fun embellishments, perfect for any occasion, day or night.
Most come in a convenient cross body style, making this piece easy to carry around for everyday use. For a version that’s slightly edgier, look for the circle silhouette in a clutch style, like this 3.1 Phillip Lim Alix Circle Clutch. To get the look yourself, make sure to also check out pieces like Brahmin’s Lane Melbourne bag, Anthropologie’s Carolina Circular Crossbody Bag, or Bembien’s Rose Bag, all of which are available online.

Perhaps it’s the evolution of the ‘boyfriend’ look, or the early 90s making a formidable fashion comeback (or the combination of both), but it’s easy to see that the shape of clothing for fall speaks volumes, and quite literally. From the waist through the ankle, pants are becoming more relaxed in fit, while tops and dresses are taking the liberty to balloon out in all directions.
All sorts of ruching details, such as pleating and gathering, have surfaced in order to reign in the superfluous shapes, while other accents, such as ripping and tearing, encourage the fabrics to flow freely. There may be some trepidation with committing to a new shape, but we at FPD will help you navigate by sharing how to style this spacious silhouette.
