Keeping Your Red, Well, Red, with These Tips from a Pro Colorist

Nicole Tresch

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time so far as a redhead, and although I’m a natural blonde, I don’t know if I’ll ever fully go back to that hue. Maybe I’d adopt a lighter shade of red, ala strawberry blonde, yes, but red will always be such an enticing, complimentary shade for my complexion. If you’re also red-obsessed, or recently went red, like Amy Poehler, there’s only one thing that you have to keep tabs on, and that is doing your best to preserve your color as much as possible.

The red color is incredibly brilliant, and thus, the only direction it can go is lighter, and lighter, and while I love the variations of shades that it can possess, I also like getting the most out of my hard earned cash when it comes to coloring it.

Luckily, my fabulously talented colorist Nicole Tresch, of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City  has six wonderful tips that are ultra easy to do and follow in order to keep your red as vibrant as possible in between washes and root touch-up appointments. From natural ingredients to getting glossed, Tresch dolls out the perfect advice to keep your red hair the talk, and envy, of the town.

Nicole Tresch, Colorist at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City, says in order to keep your red vibrant, do the following:

1.       Glosses in between touchups.  Come in for just a gloss, even if you’re not due for a root touchup yet in order to keep the ends fresh.

2.       Have the colorist make you a custom conditioner adding your red toner to it to refresh the color each time you wash (which should be very infrequently).

3.       Cold water washes -just like your laundry. Cold water keeps color from bleeding/fading out quickly.
