Rachel Antonoff Spring 2013 Backstage Beauty

The Theme: Inspired by the 1977 film “Powers of Ten,” Rachel Antonoff’s latest collection features an aerial view, a garden party, with landscapes, and the idea of a country club girl gone bad!
The Keys: Keri Blair for MAC Cosmetics, Jenny Balding for Cutler Salon, Candice Manacchio of CND.
The Color Palette: Clear, greys and whites, vibrant red, blues.
The Execution:  For makeup, Blair used cream blush to create a flush, while shearing out a blackened lip hue to manipulate it into more of a stain then a matte full-on color. With hair, Balding swept the left side under and back for a sleek, angular, shaved illusion, blow drying the hair to straighten it along with flat ironing the ends, while holding the look in place with Redken Fashion Works Hairspray.

For nails, Manacchio created three different looks, which took a team of six artists a total of 65 hours to make about 600 nails for the show! Secured with sticky tape or glue dots, the three styles of the nails mimicked the inspiration and actual pieces; a favorite was the white opaque nails with clear tips (to match her spring 2013 Bass brand collaboration jelly shoes), that had names of Antonoff’s friends and family written on them in Sharpie marker.

Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2013 Show and Backstage Beauty

The Show: Rebecca Minkoff for Spring 2013

The Theme: Inspired by 60s and 70s photographs by Slim Aarons

The Color Palette: vibrant reds, indigo, corals, creams, dove grey, and mint.

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look:  All of the handbags and footwear are certainly must-haves, but the most striking were the white slightly belled denim with blue or red embroidery paneling down the entire sides (see below).

The Theme: That beautiful, hip Rebecca Minkoff girl
The Keys: TRESemmé Lead Stylist Jeanie Syfu, Sarah Lucero for Stila Cosmetics, Haven for Essie.
The Color Palette: Turquoise, mint, bronzed, natural glow. A small wedge of mint on the eyes to match the nails, blush and bronzer for a natural glow, well defined eyebrows, a different take on beachy hair texture.
The Execution: Lots of mascara on top, a matte lip, well-brushed eyebrows. The hair went both shiny and matte by Jeanie Syfu of TRESemmé, a “casual but natural look with a messy middle part,” Syfu explained.
How-To Steps: Get the hair —
  1. Start by applying TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray and TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse throughout the hair and power dry with fingers for texture
  2. Smooth out ends with a Mason Pearson brush
  3. Take random sections of hair and using a 1” barrel curling iron, create curls through the mid-lengths, making sure to leave the ends out
  4. Use the flat iron to straighten ends and give the beachy texture a polished finish
  5. Spray lightly with TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo for a matte look
  6. Create a middle part with a comb and finish with a dime size amount of TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Anti-Frizz Secret Crème to fingertips, raking through the hair from roots to ends

Backstage Beauty at Carlos Miele for Spring/Summer 2013

The Show: Carlos Miele

The Theme: “A Hallucinatory Jungle,” prompted by Carlos Miele’s two-year old son’s drawings of a blue giraffe.

The Execution:


Hair by Rodney Cutler for the SALON at ULTA Beauty – A simple, understated sleek look was made to float and bounce down the runway. Miele’s line was full of textural clothing with lots of chiffon and fringe. Thus, hair took the opposite route. Cutler experimented with textured looks before deciding on the “chic” straight hairstyle that would compliment the animal print-themed looks of Miele’s collection.

Get the look by layering Redken Iron Silk 07 Ultra Straightening Spray throughout sections of the hair and blowing hair out straight until completely dry; (A round brush is recommended.) Next, flat iron small sections of the hair. Spray Redken Fashion Work 12 to keep the hair sleek and straight. Once hair has settled, use Redken Shine Flash 02 for a finished, yet natural look.

Makeup by Gato for Maybelline New York – Carlos Miele’s summer girl is meant to be beachy by day and glamorous by night. She effortlessly meanders between the two with gorgeous, glowing bronzed skin and an iconic red lip.

Begin your look with foundation. Next, dust bronzer on the cheekbones and from the forehead down to the temples. Use a highlighter on the forehead, chin, cheeks and between the brow for that tiny extra glow. Dot Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blush on the apples of the cheeks using your fingers. Swipe Color Tatoo 24 Hour Bad to the Bronze on lids; an extremely subtle layer does the trick. Mega Plus Mascara will give lashes full, yet soft movement. Finally, create that iconic red lip with #645 Red Revival, a shade, “suitable for all women,” as Gato described.

Creatures of the Wind Spring 2013 Backstage Beauty

Show: Creatures of the Wind SS 2013

The Theme: Inspired by a Japanese Godzilla movie from the 80’s in which the soul of the female character is stolen and sealed in a flower.

The Execution: Backstage, Odile Gilbert for Kérastase faked a haircut by preparing the models’ hair with Kérastase’s Nectar Thermique and pin straightening each lock before adding texture with Double Force Hair Spray and criss-crossing the sections of hair over the head. Gilbert sealed the look backstage with a hair net and a few spritzes of Double Force Hairspray, using  a pea-sized amount of Elixir Ultime The Imperial to add shine. Paired with NARS’ artist James Boehmer’s punk makeup aesthetic, the result is tough, yet ladylike.
Boehmer prepped with NARS’ Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer and Radiant Creamy Concealer, only lightly setting the complexion with Light Reflecting Powder to retain radiant, glowy skin. He made the models’ eyes pop by using Nars’ Damned and Velvet Matte Lip Pencils as shadow and lining the bottom with Silver Factory Soft Touch Shadow Pencil. Fire Down Below Lipstick completed the raw feminine look.
