The best way to do it is with an accessory, like a handbag or shoe that represents the trend, then moving onto larger scale items. i.e. garments, when you feel that the trend is right for you. The most important take away from fall/winter 2015 is that the ’70s are back in a MAJOR way. It’s really quite incredible how evident it was across many of the collections this season, and in fact, most of the trends spotted for the season are a take off what was popular during that very decade.
The 70s
Designers Rebecca Minkoff, Reem Acra, and Dennis Basso sited 70s-ish inspiration, be it an icon (Patti Smith; Stevie Nicks); or the overall glamour from the era. There was a fair share of bohemia abounding, looking best and feeling most modern when it was restrained and paired with realistic silhouettes without feeling too costumey and decade-decadent.
Fringe
The swingy stuff is officially back, and you’ll find it this fall adorning boots, bags, and every type of clothing you can think of, including fur jackets.
Feathers
The ostrich variety was the most popular feather motif on the runway, which even made its way into prints and sequined appliqué on garments. It’s hard to tell which one will be the bigger trend for fall; fringe, or feathers, but either way, wearing one of these options in a 3D variety that moves and sways as you do is BIG.
Oversized Fur Trim
This look is not for the meek, found hugging over sized collars, cuffs, and hems on garments that took to the runway. Usually dyed a monochromatic color to the garment it adorned, black, marroon, and camel hues proved to take the lead in popularity.
Jacquard
This fabrication has been hibernating since the mid-2000s, but now is poised for a comeback with the upcoming cold weather season. It’s much more subtle this time around, with options to be taken casual or formal.
Tweeds, Tartans, and Plaids
Along with 70s inspiration, the 90s were a close second in revival fashions on the runway, with a bit of grunge and a bit of prepster appearing here and there, and sometimes even coexisting in one collection. Remember the movie Heathers? Tone down the colors, soften the silhouettes, add in Kurt Cobain, and voila! You’ve got a revamped version of the tweeds, tartans, and plaids for fall 2015!
