Another New York Fashion Week trend that is perfectly in keeping with the distancing from minimalism is the use of bright/neon colors. Sometimes called “highlighter hues,” palettes of bright, neon pinks, greens, oranges, and yellows took over the runways. This is unsurprising, due to the fact the the revival of 80’s decade trends has also been increasing over recent seasons. Designers like Marchesa, Naeem Khan, and Tracy Reese all ditched neutral, subdued pieces that make up the minimalism trend, and opted for a composition of eclectic, vibrant colors, all perfect for the warmer months of the year.
Stacey Bendet of Alice and Olivia, was inspired for her Spring 2018 collection by the iconic Chelsea Hotel in New York City. She got help from young artists in the city to create her designs, which included pieces like brightly colored suits and ruffled dresses in busy, floral prints. Tracy Reese debuted a collection of simple, staple style pieces, with the added lively statement of hot pink, graphic prints, and sequins.

The Show: Tracy Reese
The Theme: An exercise in fine texture: feathers, knits, voluminous brocade, embroidery, and sequins.
The Color Palette: Natural hues of mustard yellow and brown, progressing into graphic black and white. A palette of burgundy with pops of gold rounded out the evolving palette.
The Collection’s Signature Look: The show was highly diverse, from ornate, embroidered brocade fabrics to modernist graphic prints in slouchy silhouettes. The most stunning look was a winter landscape graphic on a pullover, paired with slouchy herringbone boyfriend trousers, a fringed scarf, and messy bed-head casual locks.

Calypso St. Barth
These breezy fabrics and flowing designs will have everyone itching to escape on an island getaway. Influenced by the vibrant colors and patterns of Marrakesh, Calypso St. Barth takes their famously beachy style to an exotic extreme. The incorporation of rosy coral, desert orange, and palm green give the collection a sense of excitement and adventure, while the hamman white, icy silver and navy compliments make the looks chic and classic.
Tracy Reese
Inspired by the landscapes of artist David Hockney, Reese’s Spring 2013 collection features a variety of natural hues, including foliage-inspired greens, cool blues, lilacs, and tangerines. These rich colors are paired with neutrals creating a powerful contrast. The juxtaposition continues as Reese couples soft fabrics with structured pieces. The organic colors and laid-back fabrics create an easy-going vibe, while the structured design and bold accessories make the look sophisticated and edgy.
Pamella Roland
The harsh geometric shapes and bold colors of Ellsworth Kelly’s iconic works are reflected perfectly in Pamella Roland’s Spring 2013 collection. The sharp lines and angles give the pieces an exciting energy that is contrasted with the effortlessness of the long, flowing skirts.
Rebecca Taylor
As if we weren’t nostalgic for summer already, Rebecca Taylor’s spring line has us wishing we re-located to Hawaii, and are currently soaking in the sun. Bleached denim and frangipani prints make this collection perfect for relaxed sunset gatherings and cocktails on the beach.

We’ve seen a ton of shows for fall 2012, and decided to share a couple of our favorite trends that are sure to be big come fall 2012:

Gradient Hues
Color blocking hasn’t gone away, but a new color scheme has been creeping it’s way back into popularity through the fashion cycle — gradient colors! BCBG Max Azria certainly worked sun drenched, ochre hues and made them feel fresh by the dalliance of sheer fabrications, while Chadwick Bell piled on the ruffled layers for his salmon-hued version. The combination got a ladylike take at Vivienne Tam with prim and proper pencil skirts and jackets, while Emerson designer Jackie Fraser-Swan let it drip down into a patterned, charcoal-tinged coat. Try out the trend by investing one piece, like a jacket or skirt to pair with basics, or try out an accessory, like a necklace or handbag that gives off a dip-dyed effect.

Embellishment
The Fall 2012 runways blazed embellishment with everything from fringe to embroidery to beads to sequins, and it is a trend we all can incorporate into our wardrobe. For a look that will turn heads, take a cue from J. Mendel and Custo Barcelona with head-to-toe beading and studs. Both ensembles tell a story of experimental spontaneity, fusing classic and contemporary to create a look that is all their own. Or, pull inspiration from Hervé Leger and Tracy Reese. Both designers beautified their collections by adding intricate detail. Whether fringe to create flair or sequins to invoke strength, the self-determination of embellishment makes it quite sublime.
