Three Things You Don’t Know About Me

As the title suggests, here’s three things I bet you didn’t know about me:

  1. I always swap out my winter clothes for the summer attire the 1st weekend in June, every June.
  2. June is also my favorite month (and my birthday month!), as fickle as it can be, with the occasional summer rain downpour.
  3. Peonies are my favorite flower (pictured in this look), which, sadly, have a short blooming season, ending in early June.

This look is fully ready for the June rain, which consistently comes down on my birthday, every other year, without fail. With a 50% chance of it happening, I really don’t want it to “rain on my parade,” but just in case it does…I’m equipped for it! My pants wick away moisture, the sandals are tasked with navigating city sidewalks without a single “hydroplaning” incident,while my tote bag will repel the rain and conceal my umbrella, just like the champ that it is. June, you are great, I clearly love you, but when you’re fickle…I will be prepared!

Setting Bag Boundaries

In New York City, when your body functions basically as a car, using your own two feet to largely get you around, weaving in and out of human traffic and dodging any other obstacles in the way, carrying multiple bags is more of a hazard and less of a convenience. Especially on the subway when, at any point in time, you may be pressed against a minimum of four other humans, consolidating your stuff into one generously-sized bag is ideal.

In this week of extra chaos in the rush right before Christmas, I’ve been using the Dooney & Burke Newbury Suede Sloan Hobo bag in Brown, which neatly organizes and keeps secure my essentials, thanks to the its inside pockets, key hook, and zipper closure while channeling a slightly retro, ’70s vibe.  There’s also plenty of room for a few extras, such as my workout clothes, a water bottle, and even space left over to conceal a small gift.

I can’t really predict what the new year may have in store for me or what to expect in 2016, but I do know that I can rely on this bag to contain whatever I need to be prepared for it!

Comfort Makes a Comeback

I have two important questions to ask myself; “Why did I stop wearing leggings?” and “Why don’t I wear them ALL of the time?” As the weather today ran a chill up my spine, I realized that paired with the right top or sweater, leggings can of course stand alone, but can also be a great replacement for tights. It was quite a ‘duh!’ moment, and the more I thought about, the more leggings make perfect sense to wear now. Plus, comfort is so “in” right now in fashion, that it’s hard to exclude something that stretches and moves with your body…AND has an elastic waistband!

With the athleisure trend only gaining more and more momentum, it seems that leggings perfectly fit into that sleek, sporty silhouette, and can regain its moment in the spotlight as a time to shine. Booties and boots, both stylish and weather-proofed, add the perfect flourish of winter functionality to the look; just add an oversized but warm coat and a bright lip for some added flair.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

The weekend is over, the weather is frigid, but I’m going to try to just keep on smiling through it all. Having two vacations booked in March is certainly an impetus to grin and bare the blustery, unreasonable precipitation and temps, but also was taking a walk down memory lane this weekend. When I was in college, I spent most of my time living in Nolita, a dream come true for this Pittsburgher to be surrounded by Little Italy and all things cool in Soho and the Lower East Side enveloping her. Fashion Pulse Hubby and I revisited the spot where I used to live when we first started dating, and although a few things in the neighborhood remain the same, many of them have changed since 2002.

We ventured across the street and took these photos in front of a building that used to be a police precinct turned into luxury apartments, where Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford were rumored to have lived in the 1990s. It always looked so solemn and idyllic to me, and the ivy-wrought iron gates pop against the slushy urban landscape. I logged 16,000 steps that day on my Fitbit, so warmth and comfort were key to comprising my look. A roomy bag with strap lengths long enough to sit on my ultra padded shoulders was a must, along with jewelry that can peek out from amongst the layers, cold weather accessories, practical shoes, and my “double bubble,” a combination of a bubble vest with a bubble coat, ensure premium warmth.
