It’s not every day that you get to see a live runway show, let alone Oscar de la Renta’s, however you can watch it live, here at FPD! On Thursday, September 16th starting at 4:30pm with backstage interviews and the show at 5pm, you can see first hand the Spring 2011 trends (but check back at FPD for what we have to say about them too!)
Full of bright colors and bold prints, this collection wasn’t suppressed by the wearing moods of the recession. Within this return to luxury, there were at least five opulent purple dresses, each unique with over-sized puff sleeves or large sequin detailing or wave-like draping, which marked marked a turning point in fashion this season. No longer will we surround ourselves in drab monotones and minimalism to the point of boring; black and brown aren’t colors to live a life in, so take instead the colors pieced together in this Spring 2010 collection. The pinnacle of the lavish motif was the show’s final look; a massive navy tulle gown plastered with crystals across the chest, in glorified feminine style.
But what we cannot forget about Oscar de la Renta are his accessories. Creating handbags, shoes, and belts, is nothing new to Oscar, however the new ground this year is his fashion jewelry line. Tapping into his Dominican heritage, many of the necklaces were very ethnic with braided silk and bright colors like melon and peridot, but there were also some classic gold pieces sprinkled throughout the runway that any woman could easily wear.
As the inauguration creeps around the corner, I thought would be fun to look at the sketches commissioned by WWD and pick my five favorites (out of 40 sketches) that I think Michelle should wear. Why? Because who knows? She may be a Fashion Pulse Daily follwer, that’s why!

Pick #1: Diane von Furstenberg — what’s more American than a wrap dress?
Pick #2: Monique Lhuillier –the vibrant red hue and silken layers would look amazing against her complexion.
Pick #3: Marc Jacobs — this tulip-esque silhouette will give the First Lady a slight fashion forward edge at the ball.
Pick #4: Oscar de la Renta — he proves over and over again that he is truly the best at gowns!
Pick #5: Zero Maria Cornejo — She’s already a fave of Mrs. Obama’s – she really understands how to compliment a figure while displaying a disctinctive design.
Which is your favorite? Write a comment and let me know!
Oscar de la Renta, who is quite well-known for his elegant designs, lived up to his reputation with dress after dress being absolutely pristine and classic at New York fashion week. The Jackie O. sunglasses matched perfectly with the preppy prints, clean silhouettes, and a coral shaped necklace Our favorite piece was a 1950’s style red and pink floral frock with a tight bodice and flared skirt that in our opinion, stole the show. We think a leisurely stroll along the shoreline looking for seashells in this dress would be absolutely divine, n’est-ce pas? From belted one-piece swim suits to sweeping evening gowns, Oscar has got all of you Hampton and Cape Cod beach babes covered.
