The Best of New York Fashion Week, Fall 2011: Nicholas K., Jen Kao, Bibhu Mohapatra

Impeccable outerwear is a must, according to the latest fall 2011 by Nicholas K., but so is perfectly worked knits, slightly slouchy pants, and shoes (by Vintage Shoe Co.) that will let you confidently hit the pavement. Oh yeah, and you’ve got to throw in a little green or burnt orange too!

Jen Kao

Described by Kao’s run-of-show, the collection called for “rituals of reinvention,”  and featured acid rainbow hues and technicolor prints.Right out the gate, we knew there was no way anything boring would come of Jen Kao’s fall 2011 collection, who showed fantastical prints upon body accentuating, futuristic cuts in a wide range of fabrications that possessed a dark, mysterious, severe quality to them.

Bibhu Mohapatra

As one of the most anticipated shows for New York Fashion Week fall 2011, Bibhu Mohapatra’s showing was certainly an execution of ladylike elegance, without a lot of these gowns capable of taking a dip on the red carpet.

New York Fashion Week Day 1: What I Wore

[At Nicholas K, 9am, first day of New York Fashion Week. Don’t you love the security guards in the background?]

Let’s get it started! Day one was off to a rapid start, beginning with backstage at the very first show of the season, Nicholas K, at 8am. All I had time for this morning was some tinted moisturizer, Maybelline’s new Fit Me! Concealer #10, and Maybelline Falsies Mascara — no time for contact lenses! It was unbelievably FREEZING COLD outside, so I decided to nix anything that required tights for Day 1 – and instead opted for comfy, but nonetheless chic (and warm) look! Pants and my fleece-lined booties were the BEST idea I could have had on this day, as pockets were key for shoving show invites, pens, vitamins, and gum into them, and my feet looked chic without having to worry about throwing on a longer pair of boots.

Nicholas K: She’s casual, she’s cool, she’s tough! Somewhat reminiscent of the early 1990s grunge era, and Tank Girl with an updated silhouette, I absolutely love the wearability of this collection – the perfect compliment to the looks are the Vintage Shoe Co boots – stay tuned to be able to win a pair straight from the runway!

Monique Lhuillier: If I had a red carpet moment, or let’s say, switched careers and was nominated for an Oscar, I’d want to wear this gown! The gradient color is astounding, and it was such a refreshing break from metallic for evening wear! Lhuillier said this collection came to her in a dream — well, it would certainly be a dream of mine to wear this!

Carolina Herrera: because sometimes you forget that pink and red can look fantastic together, and this dress is just an effortless, classic reminder of that.
Michael Kors: I love a maxi skirt, and this look is sporty, clean and a great way to dress down while still dressing up.

[Z Spoke by Zac Posen Spring 2011 Collection]

Z Spoke by Zac Posen: While my two favorite looks could not be more opposite, when it comes to the wow factor they are equally jaw dropping! I love this Z Spoke by Zac Posen ensemble because it is such a fresh approach to menswear inspired fashion. The silk blue pants are so sleek and functional. The patterned blazer adds an edgy, retro feel to the look.

Vassilios Kostetsos: On the other hand, this Vassilios Kostetsos dress is beyond stunning. The fabric’s radiant sparkles catch the light in such a way that it can only add to the dress’ overall beauty. This modern Cinderella number is sure to turn heads!

Fashion Week Day 1:

BCBG MaxAzria showed us that neons are still important, sequins are still kicking, and asymetricality will be HUGE! Max can’t help but be influenced by some Herve Leger bondage inspiration, but we like the chance to by into the brand at the BCBG price point.

Elie Tahari knows how to dress the sophisticated, savvy gal without going overboard in bling. We salute you Elie, for even making light, baggy denim look chic and refined.

Monique L’Huillier was inspired by the Masia Warriors for this collection; only the talented Monique can take such a masculine theme and translate it to the most utterly elegant evening looks. Stay tuned for my exclusive interview with the designer!

Lorick: Abigail Lorick’s lovely presentation showed us that she can design for today, tomorrow, and practically all seasons with looks that translate to a variety of settings and ages. Very impressed – Lorick is here to stay!

Vena Cava: Why doesn’t want to be a Vena Cava girl with the subtle subversive theme of punk and grunge, complete with acid wash prints and oversized safety pin detailing.

VID00007VID00008VID00012Nicholas K/Whitney Eve/Mara Hoffman: What a terrific idea to cover 3 designers in one show under the tents! Although it did run alittle long, the three shows meshed well together, from Nicholas K’s girls that are not afraid to use masculine dressing to their advantage, the sugar and spice of Whitney Port’s collection Whitney Eve, and Mara Hoffman’s incredibly prints and artfully crafted silhouettes.

VID00023VID00026Ports 1961: this could very well be the best collection to date; Tia Cibani knew exactly what the real ladies wanted for spring, and delivered – from easy silhouettes to a light, breezy color palette.

Rosa Cha: kept it relatively simple this season with some colorblocking, incredibly lovely weaving, black and white stripes, some neon and mesh overlays.
