The 80’s trend continued throughout Milan Fashion Week, this time with a heavy focus on silhouette. Often accompanied by vibrant colors and voluminous shoulders, labels such as Jil Sander, Emilio Pucci, and Roberto Cavalli featured wide belts cinched at the waist in their most recent collections.
At Agnona, a show inspired by the 70’s and 80’s decades, featured wide leather belts worn at the waistline over relaxed, voluminous shapes. At Marni, designer Francesco Risso included wide leather belts with oversized buckles with brightly colored vinyl coats in his collection titled “Technoprimitivism.” Similar looks were featured at Fendi, with wide, checked belts on display over patent leather trench coats of the same pattern.

Some key trends from New York and London carried over into Milan Fashion Week, while others were being seen for the first time on the runway this season. These newer trends though, introduced by Italian brands, were just as bold and statement-making as their predecessors. One major trend for spring 2018 in both clothing and accessories is the use of feathers. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Erika Cavallini all debuted feather-detailed pieces in their latest collections.
Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio of Attico utilized feathers in the form of a cream colored handbag that accompanied the styling in their retro-inspired collection. On the bolder side of things, Jeremy Scott of Moschino opened his show with an extra-voluminous tulle tutu coated in pastel blue feathers. Dolce and Gabbana‘s elaborate spring 2018 show, with a theme described as “Queen of Hearts,” included a multi-colored coat completely canvassed in feathers.

As fashion month nears its end, the main statements made from designers this season are becoming increasingly evident. Daring trends and statement pieces have taken over the runways this Milan Fashion Week, and with that comes the use of sheer fabrics. The style is not particularly new, but designers have reinvented the bold look that will surely be everywhere this upcoming fall season. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Giorgio Armani all chose to include totally sheer pieces in their collections, each with an individual xtwist.
Alberta Ferretti showed sheer black pieces in her truly feminine collection inspired by Venice, while Arthur Arbesser included layered looks with transparent skirts, inspired by Berlin in the 1980’s. Anna Molinari of Blumarine stuck to the traditional look of the brand, exuding elegance with luxurious furs, chiffon gowns, and floral detailing. She showed sheer detailed dresses with black lace and fur collars.

The color palettes throughout Milan Fashion Week this season have been very cohesive overall, but one tone definitely stands out from the bunch. A color that seemingly all designers are choosing to incorporate in their most recent collections for Spring 2017 is royal blue. This specific color seems to always be in style come springtime, but it seems to be even more prevalent than usual for 2017, at times taking on chambray and dusty iterations. Giorgio Armani’s latest offering was inspired by the word “charmani,” to which the designer gives the meaning of “the lightness of the body, seductively revealing itself, finding a new balance between discipline and freedom.” Many of the pieces featured the royal blue color, meant to evoke images of moonlight on the sea.
Similarly, Sportmax was also inspired by the sea, showing a sequence of fish-like silhouettes in dark blue hues. Jil Sander offered a slightly more minimalist approach, with clean lines, and the ever-popular, classic loose fitting spring silhouette. Ports 1961 showed a vacation-inspired collection, sure to take fans of the brand straight through winter and back to the warm summer months. Beachy stripe prints in royal blue and white also took over the runway, with one model even carrying a matching lounge chair with her.
