Fashion Pulse Daily’s Fashion Week Fall 2013 Essentials

by Julia DiNardo

There is no denying the glamour of Fashion Week (our coverage starts this Thursday, February 7th!), however it takes some necessary behind-the-scenes prep, largely in the beauty department,  in order to keep up with the daily grind of heading to shows, trekking to and from the subway, and camping out on a floor and crossing my fingers for a steady wifi connection.

Since I’ve been covering Fashion Week for nine years now, I’ve learned a few tricks, and the most important one is knowing my own needs. See below for my pre, during, and post-fashion week go-tos!

I KNOW I won’t wash my hair every day, so a dry shampoo or amazing styling product is essential. This season, I will be using this handbag-size Ojon full detox  Rub-Out Dry Cleansing Spray (courtesy of my friends at Birchbox) to keep my tresses residue and oil-free, looking, and smelling fresh, so when someone comes in for a cheek or air kiss, the fact that I only had 15 minutes to get ready and leave the house that morning will be undetectable.

Speaking of undetectable scents, above I have the new Secret Outlast Clear Gel as my deodorant, as it offers 48-hour protection with no marks — essential for me since I tend to borrow some pieces to wear during the week, and can’t afford to get fragrant in the wrong way, or have any deodorant rub off onto the borrowed clothing.

Since I spend some time on camera and conducting interviews throughout the week, I can’t afford for my manicure to look worn out, so I will be giving my digits the gel treatment with the SensationNail Gel Polish, available in 48 shades (favorites of mine include the french manicure and mauve maven) and offers an ultra-shiny, chip-free manicure.
This Land’s End Linen and Leather Tote is my be-all,end-all “official bag of fashion week;” I can’t wait to stuff it full of my weekly essentials, including some of the products mentioned in this post! The supple yet sturdy leather straps will see me through the ambitious schedule of 60+ shows in style, while permitting me to jam even more goodies from my adventures into its roomy interior.

The Best of Beauty: Spring 2013 Collections -Narciso Rodriguez, Jenny Packham, Betsey Johnson, Whitney Eve

by Julia DiNardo

The Show: Narciso Rodriguez Spring 2013

The Beauty in a Nutshell: It was all about the no frills, extremely natural girl at Narciso. Deborah Lippmann used her Smooth Operator four-way buffer to shape, exfoliate, and buff nails, for a short, rounded, natural nail, finishing off with a dab of cuticle oil and working in some hand cream. Lippmann’s tips to getting down the art of buffing is to touch the nail only once with the fabric, and be conscious to not put any pressure on the tip. Dick Page for Shiseido used natural, neutral shades and worked brows by brushing them downward to find the natural line.

I asked Page how to know what kind of base layer worked best for each individual’s skin (foundation, powder, tinted moisturizer, BB Cream), and he said “if you can quickly apply it in a bathroom or on a plane and it looks perfect in those condition and lighting, then you know it’s for you!” Paul Hanlon worked the hair to a perfect simplicity, mastering a center-part, securing with a dash of By Byron Spirulina Hairspray.
The Show: Jenny Packham

The Beauty in a Nutshell: With the ladies of The Rat Pack as inspiration for the beauty, Gina Edwards for Essie created a gorgeous mani that is sooo easy to do at home; create a French manicure, then just layer one coat of shimmer on top! Edwards used Essie’s opaque white shade, “Waltz,” “Marshmallow” on the tips, and Luxe Effects Shimmer on top. Talia Shobrook for Laura Mercier used various shades of blue to create “jewel-like” eyes, mixing Laura Mercier Eye Pencil in Midnight Bleu, Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Turquoise, and Baked Eye Colour in Lagoon with five coats of mascara while making a soft coral lip with combining Creme Lip Colour in Tangerine and Lip Pencil in Baby Lips.

Jeanie Syfu for TRESemmé created my favorite hair look of the season by starting with Climate Control Mousse by creating a deep side part on the left side, back brushing, smoothing and sweeping the hair over the forehead to twist hair sections inward and finishing on the side with a sleek ponytail, flat ironing the ends.

The Show: Betsey Johnson Spring 2013

The Beauty in a Nuthsell: With the inspiration as Betsey herself, Aveda lead hairstylist Jon Reyman crimped, backcombed and tousled the models tresses, securing hair into place with Aveda’s Control Force Hairspray, a process that took upwards of 40 minutes per model. Meanwhile, Gina Edwards for Kiss/Broadway Nails matched the press-on nails to fiery red, glittered shade of the lips. She used a medium length nail, and recommends swiping some alcohol on the nailbeds to optimize decal sticking power when using artificial nails.

Gato for Maybelline created a hybrid look between a pin-up girl and a female superhero, using the Master Precise Liquid Ink Pen Eyeliner in Black to draw on the eyebrows, with “thousands of layers” of the Falsies Flared Mascara on the lashes, a combo of 24HR Color Tattoo in the lids, with Color Sensational Lip Color in Very Cherry on the lips with a layer or red glitter painted over top.

The Show: Whitney Eve Spring 2013

The Beauty in a Nutshell: Sunshine Outing for Zoya did both fingers and toes (in all blue), with the fingers rotating shades with stripes down the side. no top coat was used so that the stripe could dry without smearing, and the white polish was intended to match the white bobby pins intentionally styled and left in for the show.

Marc Mena for Garnier created a “polished tomboy” aesthetic by working in the Garnier Fructis Flexible Control Anti-Humidity HairSpray and the XXL Thickening Mousse for a smooth yet voluminous-enough folded ponytail look, using a small curling iron to zig-zag and actually kink the hair. He finished the look by wrapping and tying elastics for the folded up ponytail finish. Dominic Cruz for Kryolan worked with neutral tones, creating a dewy, fresh look with shades of taupe and smoke combined with full brows and finishing up with soft gloss on the lips.

The Best of Beauty: Spring 2013 Collections – Zac Posen, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Chris Benz,

by Julia DiNardo

Here’s a roundup of the favorite beauty looks for hair, makeup, and nails that I saw around town for New York Fasion Week Spring 2013 collections! Some you can translate literally, others, you may want to steal one or two ideas for spring, or downplay the looks to a “less is more” aesthetic.

The Show: Zac Posen Spring 2013

The Beauty in a Nutshell: Several days prior, some of the models’ hair was dyed/tweaked with Precision Foam Hair Colour solely to enhance their natural shades by Harry Josh, John Frieda’s International Creative Consultant. “Its the return to solid hair color,” Josh declared. At the show, John Frieda Creative Consultant Luigi Murenu created a ’40s inspired wave with a one-inch curling iron and keeping it shiny and sealed with Frizz-Ease Mousse.

Kabuki of MAC Cosmetics was inspired by Lena Horne, using false lashes on the outs of the eyes for a bit of glam and a thinly drawn triangle shape at the outer edge of the eye. Michelle Saunders for Essie used for different natural shades, Glamour Purse, Not Just a Pretty Face, Brooch the Subject, and A Crewed Interest, to perfectly match the models skin tones, telling me that A Crewed Interest is my perfect match!

The Show: 3.1 Phillip Lim

The Beauty in a Nutshell: Francelle Daly for NARS Cosmetics created a “modern rocker eye” for girls that were “in a band at Coachella,” inspired by gals such as Florence Welch of Florench + the Machine and Grimes with bold lashes (up to 10 coats!). Michelle Saunders of Essie created a “retro edge” nail; a half and half look with Chinchilly (one of my absolute favorites), and Brooch the subject, painting the nail vertically down. Hair was super duper brushed and teased for a slept in, don’t give a care, look.

The Show: Chris Benz Spring 2013

The Beauty in a Nutshell: “Mousse makes the hair VERY easy to work with,” declared Nick Irwin for Catwalk by TIGI backstage at Chris Benz. He used a “tangerine size” amount of Catwalk by TIGI Mousse and using Tiny Tim as the reference, created several different parts of the look, however each unit is simple: 1) a three strand braid 2) braids, let out and then finished with flat-ironed edges 3) a nun at the top 4) headbands on some models.

Daniel Martin for Lancôme worked a hybrid of a “nymph, fairy look with a slight Japanese horror movie edge it,” with cream pigmented eyeshadows (Color Design Infinite in Perpetual Pink,  cheek and eye blush, clear mascara, white liner on the insides of the eyes, and the gorgeous new Balm in Love coral electric sheer lipstick shade on the lips. Anna Maria for Lancôme used the Lancôme Vernis in Love Nail Lacquer Beige Dentelle on fingers. My favorite takeaway: – the lip shade- the coolest sheer I’ve seen!

essie Spring 2012 Collection: A Spring to Invest In

by FashionPulseAlana

[essie Spring 2012 collection, $8 per bottle]

There’s nothing like a crisp manicure to get you excited to try something fresh and new. The extraordinarily feminine essie 2012 Spring collection is made up of six colors to keep you composed and intuitive, yet temperate all the while.

This spring, essie will pay tribute to all of the ambitious, self-made women who “dream big, go with their instincts and always manage to put their best self forward,” says Essie Weingarten, brand founder and global creative director.

Available in February 2012, glorious brights and pretty pastels will do all the talking as each color dictates a certain mood. Pack a punch with Tour de Finance or ease your way into a sunny day with A Crewed Interest. No matter what, you’re ready, willing and able to take on any mission with poise and grace.
