The Smartest Accessory Ever Invented

I am a serial shopper. It’s a problem. I’ve accepted it. (That’s the first step to recovery right?)

That being said, I see so many articles of clothing, pieces of jewelry and cool accessories in my daily internet perusals that I am rarely rendered speechless by something in particular. But girls, it has happened. I actually came across something that has stopped me dead in my Internet browsing tracks, screaming inside “OMFG! This is genius!”

Are you dying to know?

They are called Bandits, fabric boot embellishments that slip over the top of your adorable yet simple fall boots to make them fresh, new and totally awesome.

This is genius in so many ways.  Allow me to count them out:

1. You can have 8 boots in 1 by simply buying different Bandits to slip around the top. Finally, making your pieces last for more than one season is super easy (and fun!).

2. There are so many boot trends right now that it is hard to keep up, especially on a college student’s budget. But with the quick slip of a Bandit you can take your basic boot from girly, to rocker chic, to Native American inspired, to grunge. And all without having to shell out another $100-$200 per pair to fit your many style moods. All you really need is a basic pair of black and brown (which are easy to find and often at a good price) and you’re good to go for years.

3. Your boots are now ultra versatile. I would also never purchase boots with these elaborate details because it would restrict them to fitting one category of outfit, whether it be by color scheme, style or feel. If I feel like going rocker chick on day with a leather jacket and chunky metallic jewelry, my leather boots will look totally out of the loop if they have a girly, Victorian inspired appliqué. But if I can change out the embellishment for a leather strap and a double gold chain, I’ve got the complete package.

4. Um, they’re cute?! These boot bracelets are super adorable and totally unique. You won’t find boots with this sort of detailing in stores unless you’ve got some serious cash to burn.

For someone who gets bored with my closet way too quickly (especially when that closet is made up of staples that I justified purchasing by my favorite mantra: “this will last me for years”), this accessory is a lifesaver. I’m starting my Christmas list now, and this is number one. And maybe number two.

Oscar de la Renta’s Bringing Luxury Back for Spring 2010

Full of bright colors and bold prints, this collection wasn’t suppressed by the wearing moods of the recession. Within this return to luxury, there were at least five opulent purple dresses, each unique with over-sized puff sleeves or large sequin detailing or wave-like draping, which marked marked a turning point in fashion this season. No longer will we surround ourselves in drab monotones and minimalism to the point of boring; black and brown aren’t colors to live a life in, so take instead the colors pieced together in this Spring 2010 collection. The pinnacle of the lavish motif was the show’s final look; a massive navy tulle gown plastered with crystals across the chest, in glorified feminine style.dress

But what we cannot forget about Oscar de la Renta are his accessories. Creating handbags, shoes, and belts, is nothing new to Oscar, however the new ground this year is his fashion jewelry line. Tapping into his Dominican heritage, many of the necklaces were very ethnic  with braided silk and bright colors like melon and peridot, but there were also some classic gold pieces sprinkled throughout the runway that any woman could easily wear.

Punch It Up with the Perfect Poncho

Ponchos are making an appearance again this fall in the form of chunky knits. Think handmade, warm and cozy. Many are a fusion of sweater and poncho that button up the front, making them easier to layer. You’ll see hoods, pockets and zippers as added features as well. Look for all wool styles made with thick yarns and lots of texture in the knitted design. Or try a lighter poncho on for size; it is more like a wrap and much more fluid than chunkier styles. Go for a neutral like gray or brown that can be paired with a variety of items in your wardrobe.

On the chunkier side, from Haute Hippie is the Chunky Wool Poncho (top left, $495.00 at Nordstrom.com) with classic overtones and a cable-knit design. It has a full zip-front closure, pockets to keep your hands warm and a slouchy hood at the back. From Stella McCartney is a pricey and luxe Zip-Front Boucle Poncho (top right, $1,685 at Neiman Marcus) with oversized buttons button as an accent on the cape sleeves. The poncho is an Alpaca/linen/polyamide/wool blend and made in Italy. Helmut Lang has also done a version, all in a minimalist style of course! Helmut Lang Knit Poncho (bottom right, $260 at Saks.com) is an alpaca/merino/polyamide blend and is super soft as well as warm. This poncho also features a generous hood.  From Elizabeth and James is the Olivia Poncho, (bottom left, $545 at Shopbop.com) made of moleskin this is the perfect piece for layering. Pair with a cozy cashmere turtleneck and jeans for a luxe weekend casual look.

Beware of Meggings!

When it comes to fashion, Americans seem to be a little late on the uptake. More often then not, fashion trends start elsewhere before they creep their way over to NYC, L.A., and the rest of this fine place we call home. While this often leaves us waiting in anticipation for the latest craze in handbags or jeans to make their way into our closets, we aren’t always leaping to be the next nation to pick up a trend.

And right now that trend that we’re praying will pass us by is Meggings.

Yes, meggings. Leggings for men. Grown men. They have blown up in Tokyo (and have been spotted in Paris, London, and, gasp, New York), with men sporting them under shorts and with boots. And not just to keep warm during a morning run on a cold winter day.

This is a full-blown fashion statement just screaming “Look At My Junk!”

Being that I live in NYC, the first stop for new trends, I’ve recently had the honor of a run-in with a pair of meggings. And it was brutal. Seriously, I don’t like watching girls walk around flaunting their camel-toes in these things and now I’m forced to deal with full-frontal on a dude?

I have no idea what these guys are thinking, but I sure as hell know what I was thinking when I came face to outline-of-a-nutsack with a man sporting meggings. It went a little like this:

God I’m tired. I can’t wait to get that Americano into my belly. Ugh, why is this bitch in front of me taking so long to order? And why is her voice so deep? Wait. Is that a beard? Is that a dude? In leggings? OMG, that is a dude in leggings. Is it Halloween yet? Is that a Peter Pan costume? No, it’s not Halloween. And it’s a Monday afternoon. WTF? Why are his thighs smaller than mine? And where is his cellulite? Where does he keep his wallet? Oh wait – there it…oh. No. That’s his junk. Nice balls, dude. Just what I wanted to see while I waited in line for my ‘Bux this morning. What’s next? Meels? Mras? Mresses?! Oh god. I feel fat. And queasy. Take those off, dude. Take them off!

And then I gathered my things, ran out…and into a different Starbucks 2 blocks away.

Seriously, spandex is only OK on two men: Lance Armstrong (while he’s biking ONLY) and Superman. Let’s all say a silent prayer tonight that we don’t be seeing these on our campuses any time soon. Especially paired with a pair of Muggs.
