Milan Fashion Week Spring 2011: Jil Sander, Versus and Giorgio Armani

Jil Sander

For Jil Sander designer Raf Simons, the idea for Spring 2011 was a maximalist minimalism, working his clean lines into the voluminous ball-gown-skirt-and-t-shirt look. Think a much more streamlined version of Sarah Jessica Parker’s SATC2 look when she meets John Corbett in the bazaar. Where Simons held back in details he pumped it up in color and texture: earthy yellow and orange, royal blue, Barbie pink, stripes, and leather.

Versus

For a designer known for celebrating a woman’s curves, Donatella Versace’s spring collection of the recently revived label seemed to send off fireworks. Mini, knee-, and calf-length dresses hugged and wrapped in all the right places, gradually progressing from assertive, primary plaids to micro florals. Versace and partner-in-crime Christopher Kane admitted the fabrics actually came from the Versace archives. Yet they added trendy elements like mesh paneling to usher it into 2011. The result guarantees that the spring Versus woman won’t look like anyone else at the party.

Giorgio Armani

With a house on the island of Pantelleria, halfway between Europe and North Africa, Giorgio Armani has good reason to be inspired by the midnight sky over the Sahara. His spring show was homage to the rich, deep blues of a barely-lit African sky and its scattering of stars. Crystals, sequins, and shimmer adorned impeccable jackets, skirts, dresses, and slim-fit pants. The goings-on under the Saharan sky had made an impact on the iconic designer as well. Tribal jewelry and Tuareg head wear accented the layered silhouette, and proved an intellectual extension of the inspiration: in a collection almost entirely in blue, why not incorporate the head dress of a nomadic group known as the “blue people”?

Amazing Draping & Pleating
Designers weren’t afraid to show off their deft skills at draping and pleating this season, as horizontal, perfectly laid draping (seen above) and rich, Fortuny-like pleats added an air of ladylike classicism to Spring 2011’s runways.

That 70′ Show

Every season boasts a general consensus of inspiration from decades past, and this time around the ’60s and ’70s most visibly reined. Everyone was talking about the Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs collections that heavily mimicked the 1970s vibe with everything from the hair and sunglasses to the free flowing silhouettes, fabrications, and color palettes.

Spotless Whites
This season I was very much in love with the use of pristine whites on the runway. It added a particular grace to each of the garments. Made from delicate chiffons and silks, these pieces were simple and tasteful. The flowing white fabrics were alluring, with hints of sophistication as well as seduction. The way the material clung to the body showed a true appreciation for the feminine form and highlighted the extraordinary talent of these inspiring designers.

Playful Prints

Who doesn’t love bright colors and eye-catching patterns?  I sure do! My favorite looks this fashion week were the fabulously, funky designs of Zac Posen and Rachel Antonoff. Their quirky baby doll dresses in blues, greens, yellows, and reds were brilliantly conceived and tons of fun! Each look had such a fresh, youthful spirit. Perfect for a girl who simply loves life!

Blushy Pinks
It brings out color without being garish and overpowering (which sometimes a red or purple can be!) and the slightly warm hue exudes a delicate femininity.

Stay Comfy This Fall In a Slouchy Sweatshirt Top (thefind.com Guest Post)

It was rather surprising to see trouser-style sweatpants get the upscale treatment, paired with boyfriend blazers and ankle boots for a comfy-chic fierce fall look. It was hardly shocking then to see cozy crew-neck sweatshirts follow suit and get fancified as well (though not to be worn at the same time as your jazzed-up sweatpants, of course!). The result is a low-maintenance look that’s unexpectedly versatile, able to be dressed up with glitzier accessories or kept casual and classic with your favorite pair of worn jeans. New York Fashion Week S/S 2011: Organic, Jill Stuart & Elise Øverland

Challenging my body clock, I descended into the basemen of the Ace Hotel to a club-like atmosphere long before cocktail hour.  Accentuated by lax side-swept locks, the looks were soft and refined with indications of attention to hand-stitched details. The light color scheme of innocent pastels, shades of brown and loads of white worked well with the large summer hat, floral gown and flower embroidery that embellished shorts, blouses, and a cropped pant. The translucent tan chemise defied vulgar, paired with opaque khaki trousers and a thigh length white coat. Refined yet playful, John Patrick brewed a morning-coffee friendly presentation.

Jill Stuart

With the likes of Kim Kardashian sitting front row aptly clad in last season’s Jill Stuart frocks, the Koch Theater resonated with an eagerness to see the acclaimed designer’s take on spring fashion.  Nude faces with a slash of coral lips paraded the runway in a neutral palette of cream chiffon, camel-colored  suede, and the classic black and white pairing with effortless sophistication. A-line shapes dominated the collection, manifested in this season’s tan shorts, lightly striped dresses and dramatic capes. Contrasted with alternating rounded collars and short cuff necklaces, the overall aesthetic tasted like a cocktail of upscale saloon blended with a dash of southern derby grace. The show culminated with a sweet calf length cream gown, cinched at the waist with a playful black bow. We like.


Elise Øverland

As always, this season’s collection met our expectations with an abundance of leather, but with a refreshing softness laced into its seams. Accentuated by tousled middle-parted locks, the line was more innocent than its predecessor in February. Military caps were soothed by the lightness of the army green fabric with which they were paired, while leather micro-minis  were sweetened with three-quarter length sleeves. Serving as a pseudo intermission, a mohawked man in drag proved the designer’s wide demographic as he flaunted a look whilst playing the violin in sync with the soundtrack. Though the classic Øverland pairing of black with shades of brown dominated the collection, its palette was pervaded by electric blue, neon yellow and some fresh gold-embellished mustard. Edgy deep-slit jumpsuits were balanced by romantic black and white crocheted frocks  revamped with geometric patterns, while classic shapes were made playful with head scarves and adorable balloon sleeves. It’s no wonder the likes of Kelly Osbourne sat front row.
