Another New York Fashion Week trend that is perfectly in keeping with the distancing from minimalism is the use of bright/neon colors. Sometimes called “highlighter hues,” palettes of bright, neon pinks, greens, oranges, and yellows took over the runways. This is unsurprising, due to the fact the the revival of 80’s decade trends has also been increasing over recent seasons. Designers like Marchesa, Naeem Khan, and Tracy Reese all ditched neutral, subdued pieces that make up the minimalism trend, and opted for a composition of eclectic, vibrant colors, all perfect for the warmer months of the year.
Stacey Bendet of Alice and Olivia, was inspired for her Spring 2018 collection by the iconic Chelsea Hotel in New York City. She got help from young artists in the city to create her designs, which included pieces like brightly colored suits and ruffled dresses in busy, floral prints. Tracy Reese debuted a collection of simple, staple style pieces, with the added lively statement of hot pink, graphic prints, and sequins.

This most recent New York Fashion Week proved that minimalism and subtle statements may be a thing of the past for the next upcoming spring season. In terms of accessories, one trend that made a clear impression was the fanny pack. Designers like Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Tam, and Creatures of the Wind all featured their version of the sometimes controversial piece in their collections. The polarizing accessory has been making its comeback in the street style world, and based on these most recent designer releases, is only gaining in popularity.
Marc Jacobs‘ most recent collection for Spring 2018 was inspired by earlier decades of his career, along with the atmosphere of New York City, in which his career has taken place. He utilized fanny packs in oversized styles and vibrant colors, thought to be representative of New York City tourism. Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind drew inspiration from famous Dutch painters as well as the psychedelic movement of the 1960’s, and included fanny packs in neutral tones and leather fabrics.

As far as trends go, this may be one of the easiest around: take a classic blouse or straightforward dress, add an adornment of a lengthy black ribbon, loop it into a drooping bow, and voila! Tie neck trend achieved! I love a pieced together look, updated with a more dainty, long ribbon lazily tied around the neck with the ends casually trailing downward. I’ve included five shoppable example of the tie neck look, with the bonus of an example of how simple and versatile it can be to DIY this trend.

Among the abundance of fashion and beauty looks experiencing a revival from the 90s and early 2000s are wide leg bottoms, and more specifically, flare and bell bottom styles. Perfect for the upcoming fall season, this leg-lengthening fit is sure to be flattering on anyone. Flare style, as opposed to bell bottoms, are less exaggerated and narrower in silhouette, making them ideal for a less bold, more casual look. To take the statement silhouette even further, many brands are offering high-low versions of the bell-bottom style. Check out Alice + Olivia’s version, featuring a high waist and ideal look for a day-to-night piece. For a bolder take on the same look, try Topshop’s Mermaid Frill Trousers.
In the denim department, staple pieces like the Citizens of Humanity Drew High Rise Crop jeans or Paige Denim’s High Rise Bell Canyon jeans will take you straight through the colder months in style.
