Fall 2014 Trend: Petal Pink

Ready to think pink? From the babiest of shades to aged, dusty sophisticated versions, petal pink is making a huge comeback for fall 2014.

Winter white always looks and feels so luxe, and sometimes soft, blushy shades of pastels in the wintertime, when paired artfully, can have the same effect. I’m feeling that an ultra soft, whispery shade of petal pink is on the rise as the new “it” color of the season, with potential to become just as chic as the classic neutrals!

Kate Spade Fall 2014

Kate Spade gives us a nod toward the usage of the color, letting it soften up 50s inspired wool coats, sunglasses, bags, pants and shoes, reiterating the shade in several different complimentary hues.

Jason Wu Fall 2014 Rtw

Jason Wu goes for a velvety finish with the shade, introducing it with a bit of grey to it and confident enough to infuse it with elegant wide-leg trousers.

Marissa Webb Fall 2014

Marissa Webb goes for pink on pink appeal, making it absolutely  introducing by introducing slouchy shapes that can hold their own when put together.

Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2014

Rebecca Minkoff applies sheers and pleating in this color, giving it a bit of an edge with a deep, dark lip stain to offset the assumption of soft pink femininity.

As delicate as a petal, this flouncy layered skirt from Milly by Michelle Smith takes on a bit of a champagne hue, but overall, channeling something bold and a little bad ass with its assertive frou frou and flow of garment.

Even at Marc by Marc Jacobs (MBMJ), who tends to unequivocally skew away from the trends, featured the softest of feminine pink shades, albeit, toughened up by the heavy duty, rubbery texture of the skirt.

Fall 2014 Trend: The New Volume

Every few years, lets say three to maximum, five, the silhouette changes. Fast, I know, hardly giving you enough time to wear your items into the ground! Get ready: now is the time when the shift is certainly evident, with looser, boxier cuts in practically EVERYTHING coming into play. Up, up, and away! Clothes are no longer so concerned with razor sharp cuts molded to the body, but rather are sporting looser, more generous and accentuated volume.

From your coat, to your trousers, top to your skirt, the shape is cutting away from the body, leaving more room for layers, drooping the shoulder line over onto the arms, and drop waists billowing out for exaggerated volume. Take the lead from these designers who have provided masterful examples of how the new volume is literally taking shape.

Rag & Bone Fall 2014
Rag & Bone — always effortlessly cool,  lengthen and widen a motorcycle-style jacket, while adding textured layers underneath that range from the sheer to the opaque, all the while loosening up their relationship to the body.
Peter Som fall 2014

Peter Som keeps his sleeves and bodice on the looser side, almost as a practice in volume for the big shabang; the skirted bottom which will fill the atmosphere in all directions.

Richard Chai Love Fall 2014

Richard Chai LOVE  gave the appearance of a jacket that could be cut for him – but of course, looks much better on her! Skirts fit at the waist and flare out through the hip, making the new found bulbous volume feel right at home amongst the other belongings.

 

BCBGMAXAZRIA Fall 2014

BCBGMAXAZRIA proves that sensuality can come in many forms – and some of those being amongst artful layering of garments and colors. The female shape is deftly redefined, moving toward a newly defined take on assertiveness through dress, and with this brand at the healm, we’re sure to see it trickle down through the mainstream for fall.

 Nanette Lepore lets the wearer ease into the volume trend by keeping the other garments in proportions that we are accustomed with already, exaggerating the details of the jacket first, like the lapel and button, opposed to venturing into immediate over sized territory.

Fall 2014 Trend: Cranberry

Forgot that punchy, orangey-red hue that’s been so popular the past few seasons, as everything for fall 2014 is coming up…cranberry! Call it Bordeaux, Merlot, maroon, deep red, but whatever you name it, just know it’s a very important color for the upcoming fall/winter 2014 season! You can of course start to incorporate the color into your wardrobe now, taking the lead from how these designers pair and texturize the hue! Here’s a few of my favorite examples below:

Nicholas K Fall 2014

Nicholas K showed the shade on a shrunken shawl collar sweater, inspired by menswear yet given soe feminine updates by the ultra soft and black tone fur trim.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2014

Tashashi Shoji naturally takes a sophisticated approach, softening it up with tiers of sheer lace, appropriate for fall in a long sleeve form and sheer hosiery.

cynthia rowley fall 2014

Cynthia Rowley goes cranberry on cranberry on cranberry, also using a touch of fur but harmonizing the look with some retro pastels and funky socks to add a bit of individuality to the look.

Pamella Roland worked the shade into opulent eveningwear by utlizing a subtly geometric pattern paired with an ultra plush  fur collar, a bright lip, and glistening  high boots.

Nicole Miller went a bit more high voltage in the shade AND the garment, horizontally quilting the sleeves of the moto jacket for added dimension and matching it with the reddish tone that appeared in the dress.

J.Crew also took a slightly different approach to the shade, styling it to monochromatic perfection, but also muting the shade a notch or two, making it appear as more of a dusty rose.

Backstage at Reed Krakoff, Michelle Saunders for essie went for a vampy look on the toes, with  two coats of “carry on” with a polished top coat of “good to go” to accentuate the killer footwear in the collection.

Pair it With This: Dust of Your Brooches!

 There’s an entire category of carefully constructed, gorgeous jewels that we’ve been neglecting: the brooch!
After seeing the Jewels by JAR exhibit at The Met and realizing some of the most original, hand-wrought pieces were the brooches, my ESP kicked in and I predict that brooches will make a great comeback as a statement jewelry item. Let’s take for example, this current winter; we’re all decked out in sweaters and coats ALL of the time  (unless you are lucky enough to live in a warmer climate), and let’s be honest here; dressing for in climate weather can be downright utilitarian and fashion-less. Adding a sparkly bauble here and there will add such a great statement to your winter look, that you’ll be a believer once the compliments start rolling in.
