Rafael Cennamo Spring 2013 Collection

The Show: Rafael Cennamo Spring 2013 Presentation

The Theme: Eveningwear designer Rafael Cennamo‘s  gowns and cocktail dresses featured Japanese inspired design and detail, with many gowns adorned in stunning cherry blossom embroidery, kimono bodices, and obi belts. Models wore bold makeup with exaggerated black liner and eyelashes pronounced underneath the eyes for added effect.

The Color Palette: Rose, black, white, gray, aqua, peach, blue, mint, coral, and sea foam

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: Moon mist gray gown with cherry blossom embroidery and over sized bow sleeves.

Lela Rose Spring 2013 Collection

The Show: Lela Rose Spring 2013

The Theme: While Lela Rose stayed true to her signature whimsical aesthetic, this season’s collection was updated with a certain ethereal quality. The designer was inspired by the work of poetic artist Jim Hodges, and it could not have been more apparent. She translated Hodge’s floral installations and chain webs with distinctive detail – textured, organza gowns emblazoned with silver blossoms met bodice dresses covered in mirrored lace. Metal necklines completed garments the way cobwebs cross a path that leads to a garden. With a peppy, feel-good soundtrack, we were transcended into a mystical world where nature’s landscapes reigned supreme.

The Color Palette: Sherbet hues of coral and pink were cooled with teal, sky blue, and lavender. Jewel tones in yellow and jade saluted Lela Rose’s AW12 collection.

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: Tailored trousers were printed with cobalt blue flowers or embroidered with symmetrical guipure in a way that was structured, yet delicate. And while modestly draped dresses made for elegant silhouettes, the webbed chains brought about a certain edge. But perhaps the most unexpected looks were those that appeared first – camouflage pieces contrasted pale, tweed suits with linear stitching, and woven plaid was highlighted with a pop of neon – proving that nature can be quite pretty, yet undeniably powerful.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 Collections: Ruffian, Concept Korea

The Show: Ruffian Spring/Summer 2013 Runway

The Theme: Toile; A Love of Couture within the context of Williamsburg, Brooklyn

The Color Palette: Subtle tones of springtime- blues, pinks, yellows and whites with hints of navy

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: As hip, cool models walked the runway at the Ruffian show, the audience was invited to hang in the coolest neighborhood, exactly where designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais live- Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As diverse as the neighborhood that inspired them, the collection focused on the juxtaposition of street style versus runway, baroque with minimalism and luxury fabrics with classic Americana shapes. All topped off with high-poofed hair and Converse Chuck Taylor sneaks, the great designs from Ruffian connected various generations and aesthetics. Highlights included to die for boy blazers, sexy corsets and beautiful blouses, all sporting a Brooklyn-inspired toile pattern created especially for Ruffian. Complimented by ticking stripes and brocades, preppy never looked so bad-ass.

The Show: Concept Korea Fashion Collective Spring/Summer 2013

The Theme: Five Korean Traditional Colors- The interpretations of the five colors and their meanings: Red symbolizing fire; black for water; blue for tree; white for iron; yellow for ground.

The Color Palette:  Red, black, blue, white and yellow

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: Concept Korea features five standout designers from the Korean culture.  This year’s collaboration included CHOIBOKO by Choi Bo Ko, CRES.E. DIM. by Hongbum Kim, KYE by Kathleen Kye, Lie sang bong by Lie Sang Bong and SON JUNG WAN by Son Jung Wan.  While the color palette and theme was focused on the Korean traditional colors, there was nothing traditional about the selected designs displayed by each designer.  An array of prints, shapes, drapes and details expertly displayed why Korea and its fashion designers are a force to be reckoned with.  In a unique display of fashion, each designer showcased their interpretations on their own mini-stage. The inspiration of color, nature and design crafted the beauty that is Korean design.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013: Christian Siriano, Son Jung Wan

The Show: Christian Siriano Spring 2013

The Theme: This “Project Runway” alum was inspired this season by the whimsical movement of ballet. His show this season was a story of love and romance in fairyland. The designer wanted the collection to feel light, soft and romantic, but modern enough for today’s elegant woman. One of the main components in American designer Christian Siriano’s show were his shoes (he even included flats!). Each style is named after a woman and the designs are perfect for evening or simple enough for day (and are accessible to all, thanks to his deal with Payless!).

The Color/Palette: Neutral/pales, sea foam, and blush

Best/Collection’s Signature Standout Look: The dramatic gowns at the end of his show were by far the standout pieces,  and signature Siriano style, including a strapless tiered tulle gown in watercolor.

The Show: Son Jung Wan Spring 2013

The Theme: One word can describe the shapes by Korean designer Son Jung Wan and the woman that wears her pieces: romantic. Light and airy dresses were complimented by Princess Leia buns and braids during her Spring 2013 show. Her shapes appeared as both sexy and luxurious. The designer also playfully included hints of metallic with touches of lace and tulle into her soft, silk and linen designs.

The Color/Palette: Yellow, neutral, teal, and raspberry

Collection’s Signature Standout Look: Out of the 42-piece collection, the ultra-feminine dresses stood out the most; a gold sequined cutout dress, a teal print pleated dress and a silver peplum dress were favorites.
