Elie Tahari Fall 2011 Collection

The Elie Tahari fall 2011  line showed a lot of animal, appliqué, and lace layering inspiration. If you were into the burgundy velvet from the 90’s now’s your chance to bring it back from the depths of your closet!  Animal print, fur, and leather were all prevalent in the line combined with fabrics that had a light sheen, transparency or texture to them.  We especially enjoyed that whimsical feeling of the sheer, flowing fabrics mixed with the dark hues and fairytale-looking hair accessories.  Hair and makeup were kept minimal and sophisticated with natural warm and rosy tones on the face and hair in a low, center part ponytail.  To tie in some Elie Tahari inspiration into your wardrobe, try basing your outfit around an animal print piece and layering with sheer pieces, lace or leather.

Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2011 Backstage Beauty

Carmen Marc Valvo‘s inspiration for hair and makeup at his F/W 2011 show was a ballerina just after a day of rehearsal.  The designer teamed up with Ted Gibson Salon’s Devin Toth for a casual take on a pulled back look that is designed to move.  The makeup team, lead by Romero Jennings for MAC Cosmetics, gave the models a fresh, wide-eyed look with a pop of blush on the cheek.

To get the look:
Hair Products/Tools: Ted Gibson‘s hair sheet, build it blow-dry spray, beautiful hold hairspray, blow dryer, round brush, 1 inch curling iron
How to: Start with TG’s hair sheet to tame fly aways and eliminate static.  Use the blow-dry spray for volume and movement before blowdrying hair using round brush to give volume to the root.  Pull back a half-ponytail section of hair, twist close to scalp and pin to secure.  Curl bottoms for extra bounce and movement.  *Tip* Low on time? Devin says a securing hair in a top knot before bed will give the hair similar movement for those of us rushing out the door in the morning!

Makeup Products/Tools: Mac cream colour base, fascinating eye kohl, cremesheen lip glass, Mac 219 pencil brush, brownish taupe eye shadow
How to: Start with a good, dewy foundation and powder where needed.  For the eyes, dust the browningh taupe shade over the lid with a fluffy eye shadow brush and take the color under the eye using a pencil brush like the Mac 219.  Use the Fascinating eye kohl (white eye liner) on the bottom rim of the eye for a wide-eyed effect and apply mascara only to the top lashes to emphasize the look.  Use your fingers to tap a pinky/peach blush onto the apples of your cheeks and finish off by tapping excess cream blush onto the lips and topping with Mac cremesheen lip glass.

Fall 2011 Collections: Concept Korea, Sergio Davila

Concept Korea:

This season, Concept Korea presented the collections of DO HO, General Idea, Lie Sang-bong Paris, and Steve J & Yoni P. Their ambition to generate a sense of Korean style into the New York fashion scene has been a success, with notable fashion trends now visible in both cultures.
Designer DO HO chose to embellish the upper body with fur coats, over-sized collars, and gold jewelry, balancing it out with skin-tight bottoms and polished low ponytails. Choosing muted natural colors, like green, plum, yellow, crème. and brown, allowed her to vary the types of fabrics used, without over doing it.
Choi Bum Suk designer of General Idea, showed menswear, which embodied the boyish charm of a student in Korea, with seasonal sweaters, cropped denim, knit shorts, and bubble leg warmers. The clothing was both fashion forward and durable, a pairing becoming more common in New York, especially for winter-wear.
Presenting a more refined collection was Lie Sang-bong. The black and nude colored pieces were glammed-up with bright gold accessories and embellishments. Long tapered skirts walked a mini runway, accenting the female shape and showing the mobility and flow of the fabric.
The final designers, Steve Jung and Yoni Pai, took a different root. A mix between Aztec patterns, grudge t-shirts and leather jackets brought a completely contrasting nuance to the show. Bright red lips and wispy teased hair added to the devious temperament of the rock and roll nature.

Sergio Davila

Sergio Davila’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection was a representation of lustful magnetism. On every model, assorted textures and subtle royal colors manifested the alluring nature of the clothing. The timeless sensibility of the collection is globally relevant, allowing the garments to speak for themselves, in all dialects. The brown toned silk scarves on the men and the sheer mysterious blouses on the women are just two examples of this, establishing an elegant connection between New York and South America.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011: Elene Cassis, LUBLU by Kira Plastinina

Elene Cassis:

The first model turned the corner at Elene Cassis, and immediately set the tone for the entire show. She wore a simple, color blocked black and white slip dress – clean and accessible. The collection was all about the defined silhouette – fitted a-line dresses, skirts, vests, and cinched jackets dominated the show. The color palette was almost entirely black and white, but soon transitioned to a shimmering burgundy/maroon, which seems to be the “it” color for the fall 2011 season. It seemed as though Elene was targeting the refined, mature woman. The looks could be dressed up for a nice luncheon or dinner event, or kept casual for any office setting. There was one tan open jacket with a triangular pattern lining that caught my eye – chic and minimal. Her burgundy silk blouses moved with grace and elegance, adding a nice touch to any outfit.

LUBLU Kira Plastinina:

If any punk rocker wanted to revamp and refine her wardrobe, they should probably check out LUBLU‘s Fall 2011 presentation. Lots of leather, black, and sheer fabrics constructed in simple silhouettes and accessible outfits paved the way to a collection that took influence from a tough, but refined rocker. Pops of bright red served as a nice break from the constant flow of tan and black. Leather pants are here to stay, and LUBLU makes a statement that they can be chic on a daily basis. One piece in particular seemed right on trend – black sheer long sleeves combined with a cotton gray vneck – a nice tasteful use of black sheer that could add an edge to any casual outfit.
