Donna Karan Introduces Her New Casual Luxe Pre-Fall 2011 Line

Donna Karan has done it again! We are in love with the DKNY Cozy , but could you imagine an entire new line based off of the same great comfort, sophistication, and style? Well if so, you’re in luck. The designer has launched for the pre-fall season Donna Karan Casual Luxe, a new collection dedicated to luxurious comfort, however, keeping the vibe of effortless chic. Whether you’re on the go or sitting back with a good read, this line certainly enhances the everyday experience with the combination of georgette, leather, suede, and cotton to make these pieces timeless and seasonless; just what every wardrobe needs. From the casual sophistication of the new stretch pant and stretch skirt to a collection of soft t-shirts, stylish vests, and an oversized sweater, there are a multitude of perfect layering options. Really, the questions is: What pieces are you going to get?

Fall 2011: Kinder Aggugini, Dolce & Gabbana, and Helmut Lang

Kinder Aggugini

If you hadn’t stopped to take in the Macy’s ads proclaiming designer Kinder Aggugini’s US arrival, you might want to start to take note. The designer’s eponymous label’s Fall 2011 show was a graceful unity of the simple yet tailored aesthetic he created for the Kinder Aggugini for Impulse line for the mega retailer. There was an architectural symmetry to the knee-length coats and pencil skirts, but a playful exuberance in the floral prints that peeked from beneath. Even a basic tee or two made an appearance, and they didn’t feel out of place for a second.

Dolce & Gabbana

A little 1920s gangster, a little “Vogue” Madonna (minus the cones), the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 show juxtaposed the masculine/feminine mix to a tee this season, and yes, we mean that literally. The looks alternated between the male and female-inspired pieces, with emphasis on fur trim, a multiplied star motif, and deconstructed zoot suits. Two secondary prints, a modern brocade and sheet music, provided a bit of whimsy and sultriness to the fall collection. In the accessory department, it seems Dolce & Gabbana left no shape or shade unturned, as star-shaped glasses, coin-purse belts, and bright pink oxfords were just a handful of the items to gush over.

Helmut Lang

If Kinder Aggugini displayed an architectural symmetry for Fall 2011, then Nicole and Michael Colovos had architectural asymmetry under wraps over at Helmut Lang. The duo bedecked their bowl-cut model in draped and ruched cashmere, shearling and fur jackets, and cascading knit dresses, all in an elegant palette of black, white, taupe, and grey. The asymmetry came from the fact that there wasn’t an even hem in sight, and silhouettes that seemed predictable ended up multi-layered, one-shouldered, or highly angular. With her little rebellion in the form of black socks and boots, the Helmut Lang girl may don a sleek dress for the party, but she’ll show up on a motorcycle and pull out a cigarette holder the minute she arrives.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011: Alexander McQueen

If Queen Elizabeth I had opted to be the ‘Decadent Dominatrix Queen’, Creative Director Sarah Burton would have sat quite comfortably in her court. Proving once again that her 15 years at McQueen’s side were well spent, Burton’s Fall 2011 collection embodied the late designer’s sensibility of the strong female who has a fragile side. And who better to channel than one of England’s most powerful yet feminine queens? Virginal white dresses and skirt suits were dramatized with Elizabethan ruffled collars, layer upon layer of wispy feathers and horizontal zippers eager to reveal some skin. If all the white had you wondering, the line was appropriately punctuated with somber corset-laced ensembles and black leather harnesses. Ten bucks says Lady Gaga already put in an order.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011: Balmain, Maison Martin Margiela, and Jean Paul Gaultier

Balmain

Considering how much Balmain’s Christophe Decarnin has worked the 70s era into the house’s collections, it’s no surprise that there was a Ziggy Stardust energy on the Fall 2011 runway. Bib-fronted tuxedo shirts, glittering jumpsuits with pencil-thin suspenders, and a girl-meets-the-man-who-fell-to-earth cut in his always incredible jackets. The volume on the rock n’ roll wasn’t as high this season, but that won’t stop Balmain die-hards like Rihanna from picking up a few pieces.

Maison Martin Margiela

While the Maison Martin Margiela Fall 2011 collection may seem straight-forward, it certainly had its share of contrasts; dainty floral patterns amid matte leather, clean blocks of color that peel away to reveal an opposing layer, courtesy of lengthy vertical and horizontal zippers, jackets and dresses that moonlighted as coats. The textures were fascinating as well; patent leather was paired with knits, while another look matched fur with a simple sweatshirt. Like earthy caterpillars, the models seemed to be shedding a layer, ready to emerge as something else entirely.

Jean Paul Gaultier

Sporting bouffant silver beehives, the parade of models on Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2011 runway looked more like chic librarians than his usual Dita Von Teese-infused woman. Yet the Von Teese inspiration was never too far away; amid the flowing tweeds, pinstripes, and buttoned-up print blouses were wrapped leather skirts, tightly-netted lace catsuits and tights, and fur. The overall aesthetic may not have been quite risqué, but there was still some sensuality simmering beneath those tight collars.
