Let me be 100% honest with you: I don’t like shorts. I think that they look bad on everyone, all of the time, and especially terrible on my short little legs. I rarely ever wear them, and are never even a thought, but…what if there was a way to make them cool? Like being incorporated into a lightweight, breathable, army green linen romper just perfect for the summer? Can you even imagine the possibilities of entirely new looks unfolding, thanks to this revelation? I surprised myself at Marshalls; I was very much drawn to this garment, despite my “no shorts” regulation, but rules, especially fashion-related ones, are meant to be broken. I was certainly inspired to try something new, and evolve this look into a summer festival/concert-going look for the over 30 set.
Adding in a tassel bag upped the festival vibe, along with an array of bangles, vibrant jewelry, and espadrilles. I already have tickets for a few summer concerts, and this inspired me to pick up one more: to a reggae fest at Red Rocks Amphitheater. I’m also prepared for scorching days and chillier temps at night thanks to one extra versatile accessory (cue in the pashmina wrap!).
Now, I’d like you to also have the opportunity to surprise yourself with new high-quality, unique style possibilities that you can discover at Marshalls.
I’m giving away a $100 gift card to one lucky winner! See below for entry details and the rest of my personal style post!

[A picture from the summer that I started Fashion Pulse Daily]
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a while, you could miss it.” Yep, this is a quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and I’m sure I’ve used it on the blog before, but with a constant, if not increasing list of urgent to-dos and musts these days, I found it crucial to take pause and reflect (also, how is this movie 30 YEARS OLD?!?!?). As the medium of blogging and sharing the sharing of information as a whole has evolved, I am constantly thinking about what that means for me personally and Fashion Pulse Daily. I can’t and for the most part haven’t done things exactly the same since the blog launched in 2008, but at its core, the mission remains consistent. I bring a mix of fashion and beauty insider knowledge and expertise to the table, along with personal opinion, style, and a finger on the pulse of the next cool product, place, or experience.
I’ve realized that I’ve gotten so caught up in the routine of needing to do all of these things that I’ve lost sight of how I really want to do them. I want you to feel my excitement when I come across something incredible, and so I’m going to test out capping out the end of each month with a “What Julia Has Been Up to This Month” post, featuring quick little tidbits across rotating categories for a more personal touch that I really want to implement back into the blog. If you like it, I will keep it up, and if you have suggestions- please send them my way in the “comments” section- thanks! I’ve already written WAY more of an intro than I intended, so without further ado…here’s the debut edition!

Writing: I’ve been a bit of a slacker at FPD for good reason: I’ve been consumed with writing and prepping loads of academic-related work! I recently presented to London College of Fashion Retail Management Masters Studies students (hosted by LIM College) on Digital Influence in Fashion Marketing, and am in the early stages of research for a conference in the fall in which I may be presenting on the cultural and sartorial significance of the kimono. I’m also wrapping up the semester at NYU with my class Style & Society Part II, and beginning to get ready for the Summer Fashion Lab on Fashion Blogging that I teach at LIM College (open to high school and college students-come take my class! You can find out more about it here!). I’m also gathering thoughts and materials in order to teach the Fashion Merchandising & Retail Management Capstone in the Graduate Studies Program at LIM College for the summer semester, and updating my class for Fashion Writing this fall in the undergraduate program as well. Am I keeping busy with courses? You could say that, yes!

As long as the temperature hovers at 50 degrees or warmer, I’m okay with spring coming a little later this year. With a glass half full approach, I can look to those pieces in my wardrobe that I don’t feel I’ve fully taken advantage of wearing in the colder months, and give them one extra opportunity to feel amazing in them before they get tucked away for the season. As I’ve gotten older and acquired a taste for particular brands, I’ve noticed that they always look better together. It’s unified my look, and let the eye beholding them rest on consistency of shape and design.

It’s certainly odd to present a stereotype referring to a nation as having a singular style or look, but during my travels throughout Japan over the past few weeks, some all-encompassing trends were so evident that they were impossible to miss. Naturally, I had pre-conceived notions about what to expect when it came to fashion and beauty there, that for the most part, I reconsidered practically all of them throughout my trip.
I also never realized how “American” I dress, until this trip, and how I am distinctly categorized as such, despite feeling that I tend to not “follow the herd” when it comes to trends. The most dramatic of observances of my “American-ness” in dress was that my silhouette was completely off. Skinny jeans/pants have altogether disappeared for women there, although quite a bevy of American brands and products that harp back to nostalgia, are still relevant, seeing a reincarnation as an “it” brand or product, once again (more on that on the blog later this week).

Naturally, I did a bit of shopping for both fashion and beauty items, and enthusiastically folded these goods into my routine and aesthetic upon my return to the USA. A favorite discovery was certainly Sou Sou Kyoto, a brand that radiates a Marimekko-like vibe in its high quality and iconic prints, coupled with modern interpretations of traditional Japanese kimono, which unbeknownst prior to me, the word actually has many meanings, but more generically means “garment”.
