I Like It! It’s Kind of Grungy…

The subject line for this was taken directly from Fashion Pulse Hubby when he saw me in this outfit, which was an aha! moment for me in describing it in a straight forward form. It’s kind of grungy, but still works clean lines and a bit of femininity into it as well. I wish I could dress this effortlessly every day, but it’s so easy to make this look business meeting appropriate by merely swapping out my 8-eye Dr Martens out for a pair of patent leather black pumps. A bit of pleating and a white, fitted perforated leather jacket really lends an au courant quality to the look while my um (unintentional) roots, Ray-Bans, ribbed tights and of course, boots, feel a bit retro and certainly street-style worthy.

Blue Crush

In a sea of black on black on black on black, which is a typical New Yorker’s dress in the winter, embracing blue, although still a neutral shade and not dramatically different than black, can still feel like complete wardrobe refresh. Working several shades and textures of it into the mix via a wool sweater, chambray shirt, washed cotton trousers, acetate eyeglass frames and a multi tonal necklace, I think the message was clear: blue may not be the new black, but it sure looks pretty damn good!

It’s certainly an adjustment of thinking and pairing to go navy when I’ve been a huge fan of black as long as I can remember and the ease and sophistication it offers, but with a little extra effort, blue can get there too! After dying my hair red, I’ve been gravitating toward shades that look great with the new shade, and greens and blues are my new go-tos, whereas poppy red was previously my favorite shade to wear when I was a blonde.

I tend to start the blue color combination with the combination of pants and shoes, and work my way up from there, with which pair of glasses being the last factor to decide upon. The pop of my new white bag keeps the hues grounded with a smidgen of color contrast flare.

The Look of Lived In

That cozy cardie, the perfectly washed and faded jeans, the softened worn-in tee, the unstructured motorcycle jacket that rests on your shoulders just so. These are just a few of the items that constitute all-time closet favorites, easy breezy weekend-wear, the best travel clothes, and overall, items that you gravitate to in your wardrobe, time after time. Gap’s new “Lived In” collection is synonymous with the look and feel of items that encapsulate this aesthetic, looking and feeling like you’ve owned them for an infinite amount of time, and they’ve yielded to your body’s fit needs and style desires.

Hooray! I love these kind of pieces, and a Gap leather bomber jacket, which I can recall that I bought sometime during the start of college is still in heavy rotation in my wardrobe, and luckily, I can continue along this motif with some new pieces from the new iteration of  “Lived In”. Happening this month, “Lived In” is exactly what you’ve come to love about the way Gap garments wear, however, with a dose of instant gratification. The pieces aren’t tied down to a particular season, but resonate more with a feeling, a state of mind about dressing and looking effortlessly stylish.

Bucketfeet: Making Classic Canvas Sneakers a Work of Art

Two classic, canvas shoe styles and a different artist for each design. Sounds like a pretty rad idea, right? I certainly think so, and since its inception in 2011, Bucketfeet has worked with over 75 artists in 21 countries, with backgrounds ranging from graffiti and tattoo artists to graphic designers to make each pair of lace ups or slip ons 100% unique and conversation-starter worthy.  A portion of the proceeds from the shoes goes back to the artist, and you can read the various artists’ bios here (and if you are an artist, apply to design a pair, here).   The Dots style (available in spring 2014) I’m wearing in these pics was created by artist Carrie Van Hise, who is coincidentally also from New York City.
