If you’ve got Earth Day on the brain, here’s a fashionable eco-friendly read not to miss (post first published 3/10/2009)

I had the pleasure of meeting Summer Rayne Oakes at the press preview of the new Zoe&Zac line of green shoes for Payless, which she consulted on (I can’t wait!!), and was immediately impressed with her dedication and thoroughness to all things eco. I recently went to the book launch party for Ms. Oakes’ new tome “Style, Naturally: the Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty,” and was thrilled to find a book written by a hip, fashionable person on eco-frendly brands, complete with beautiful photos and a clean layout. So much information and so many “green brands” are so staid and really outdated in their styling that it’s nice to have an example of brands that are working toward reducing their impact on the environment while being on-trend, such as Form & Fauna, Terra Plana, and Kiss My Face. In addition to giving pointers and tips on what to look for in products, I thought the most helpful aspect of the text is the resources section in the back, which succinctly ties together websites to shop, definitions, and other suggested books and magazines. For more on the book and Summer Rayne Oakes, check out her site or click here to buy it!

Nowadays we live in a world of simplified DYI; you can self-publish a book, create your own videos, and even customize your footwear or clothing. We all have the potential to become experts on these things, but I still appreciate when all the options are laid before me, and I can make easy decisions to get the exact product that represents me to a T. Speaking of Ts, custom t-shirts is a trend that has been emerging in recent years, with a bevy of sites from Cafe Press to Threadless, and now the latest, in the custom t-shirt biz, Fibers.com. The guys at the site were kind enough to give me a complimentary test run of the tee, and let’s just say that they make it as easy as ordering business cards. You can either upload your own text and images or use one of their templates, which are broken into categories such as ‘I Love Shirts’ ‘Popular Culture’ and ‘Politics’. Although I’ve been designing t-shirts for over five years, I wanted to try out the site as if I didn’t have a lick of design know-how. I found the process to be relatively straightforward, with plenty of font and placement choices for the text, as well as color options. In the future, I’m hoping that they add in more women’s blank tees and organic options.
Do you like my tee? You can make the exact same one if you want to show your Fashion Pulse Daily love!

If you are scoffing and thinking “as if we don’t have enough TV shows about fashion already!”, let me first ask you this: ever wondered what happened during the last 24 hours leading up to the fashion shows each season? Panic and chaos, maybe? Any last-minute touch-ups or complete reworkings? Or, have you ever wondered what fashion designers are really like? There might already be documentaries about Valentino, March Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, and Isaac Mizrahi, but what about the industry’s newer faces – Jeremy Scott? Alexander Wang?
I don’t know about you, but I’m answering all those questions with a definite “yes”. Thanks to a new TV series from the Sundance Channel’s Full Frontal Fashion, we will get to take a closer look at the realities of the industry masked by highly dramatized reality shows, as well as the personalities that have hatched our favorite collections for the upcoming season. “The Day Before”, Sundance’s original four-part series, documents the intriguing final 36 hours before the runway shows of Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Jeremy Scott, and Narciso Rodriguez in New York, Peter Copping for Nina Ricci in Paris, and Donatella Versace for Versace in Milan. On the show’s website, the esteemed director, Loic Prigent, revealed just enough to make us thirst for more: “We explored the energy of New York with young labels like Alexander Wang, grandes dames like Diane von Furstenberg, energy and humor with Jeremy Scott, and couturelike precision with Narciso Rodriguez. In Paris, you see the sweetness and romanticism of Nina Ricci, and the extreme everything of Donatella Versace in Milan.”
“The Day Before” will premiere at 10 pm on September 8th. New 30-minute episodes will air each night at 10 pm through September 13. Mark this on your calendar and don’t forget to take over the remote on September 8, and of course watch Sundance’s other Full Frontal Fashion offerings in the meantine!

Situated in Harlem, Rocky Coulbourne‘s designs echo the street-style aesthetic, reminiscent of American Apparel. He established Coulbourne+ in 2007 and draws his inspiration from the multifaceted sense of diversity in New York, acknowledging the array of ethnicities, religions, lifestyles, and fashion. The simple aesthetic of his spring collection is a reaction to the hordes of messages thrown at us by modern media and conveys one image at a time, letting the “+” imply the rest. His Spring 2010 Preview, held in a make-shift artist loft, was dec0rated with caution tape and a mobile clothing rack. The line features graphic t-shirts, distressed denim, cozy cardigans and swimwear which was admired by the press. Shop his collection here and follow the brand as it evolves.
