The Show: Zimmerman
The Theme: The Circus
The Color Palette: Gold, Black, white, silver softened by pastel shades of pink
The Collection’s Signature, Standout Look: With a show entitled “The Ringmaster” and the circus as your point of inspiration, one can only expect guady leotards and sequins that are best left at the sideshow. But in designer Nicky Zimmermann’s hands, the circus is given a new and flirty update for spring. Combining elements of hard and soft with a black satin top that featured diagonal cutouts over a ruffled skirt with subtly painted clown faces, you’ll feel confident enough to walk the tight rope with any one of these showstopping looks.

They say that practice makes perfect. So giving design students the chance to show a collection at Lincoln Center is definitely a perfect way to start practicing if you want a career in fashion. Showcasing ten upcoming talents from the Art Institute in New York, the collections displayed a whole range of inspirational looks. Though these were students showing, there was nothing amateur about the level of skill each of these designers possessed. From pieces that were modern and streamlined to ensembles that featured theatrical draping and volume, each student presented their own vision for how they want to dress people for the future. With a fresh outlook on design, these students are sure to make a place for themselves at the tents for many seasons to come.

The Show: Brandon Sun Spring/Summer 2014
The Theme: “Feudal Japan’s Samurai Women”
The Color Palette: Shades of Gray, White, Green, Orange, Pink, Red and Black
The Collection’s Signature, Standout Look: Simple yet unexpected, Sun’s Black Leather and Voile Camisole Shoji dress is breathtaking. Laser cut and entirely made of leather, this little black dress speaks wonders to the growth and innovation produced with every season of Fashion Week. The shape of the garment is not only flattering but shocking and show stopping as well. The embroidered waistline takes the dress away from the ‘shift’ look while remaining effortlessly fabulous. The laser cut style on a widely worn look such as an LBD really speaks to Sun’s idea of finding contradiction within balance. This little black dress brings edge along with a (literal) tough exterior to a glamorous essential.
