As an accessories fiend and lover of vintage items, I revel in stumbling upon vintage jewelry and accessories from the past that were so popular at one period of time, and now, are virtually unheard of. With the styling of a sweater or jacket perched on the shoulders, however, I can’t help but get a feeling that the cardigan/sweater clip may be making a comeback. The look was something that I vaguely remember my grandmother wearing, and like anything goes, with the right balance of silhouettes, using a sweater clip could be a cool accessory, destined to certainly be a conversation starter!
Emma Thompson as author P.L. Travers wore one in Saving Mr. Banks, in which she looked elegant and sophisticated through and through, which inspired me to seek a some clips of my own.
Channel the look with matching or even contrast crew neck cardigans and shells, and streamline the silhouette with a pencil skirt or skinny pants, with the option of a bit of flare at the bottom.Keep other jewels to a minimum, however over sized studs and a cocktail ring can add a bit of flare.
When not wearing the sweater clip, you can pin it to your collar’s lapels if you have them, and if not, simply tuck it in a soft jewelry pouch inside of your bag. Sweater clips go from the simple, to the whimsical and just downright eccentric, however I feel the way to best bring this look into the 21st century is with a well-polished chain and simple pendants.
Scour Etsy and ebay like I did for a vintage or handmade one that calls out to you (the one I bought is pictured above), DIY one, or ask around to see if a grandmother or aunt may have one you can borrow.
