The drama, the fashion, the photographs! “The September Issue” was exactly what I expected with a twist; the back and forth between Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington was marvelous, and the insider feel to producing a fashion magazine was spot-on. I do have to say that it was an informative documentary, and certainly not for pure entertainment value; there’s palpable stress and tension that resonates with those of us who have worked in publishing, but I have a feeling that no one tops Anna Wintour as editrix-in-chief. For me, the experience of seeing “The September Issue” opening night in a Loews movie theatre in Manhattan was surreal; fashionistas came out in droves and there was definitely air-kissing in the aisles.
It’s odd to think about a film unifying members of the fashion industry under a Loews roof, but low and behold, it happened before my very eyes. Afterward, there was a q&a session with director R.J. Cutler, whom I think had no idea what he was walking into upon initially filming the documentary. In the film, all of the joy and pain of fashion are present, from the two-faced, backstabbing, clique-ish behavior that tends to occur, to the utterly talented, creative side and beauty of fashion. All in all, Fashion Pulse Daily gives “The September Issue” two big thumbs up, especially for those aspirational fashion writers and editors to watch to have an idea of what it really means to have “thick skin.”
