Fashion Pulse Stylist: Michelle Obama

When the Obamas get to the white house in January, the change that ensues will not only be in politics. Michelle Obama has become a fashion icon and will no doubt change the image of the typical first lady from stuffy and conservative to fashionable and funky. Over the course of the campaign, we’ve seen Mrs. Obama in colorful and modern frocks by Thakoon, Narciso Rodriquez, and Moschino. However, Michelle knows that you don’t have to spend $150,000 to look great. She set her style precedent and penchant for affordable clothing by appearing on The View in a dress from WhiteHouse/Black Market that cost only $148! We’ve picked out a few looks that we think would be perfect for Michelle’s new role in the White House, in case she is seeking some Fashion Pulse Stylist advice!

For important events, we think Michelle would look fabulous in this Michael Kors Gardenia Floral dress, $1,895, from NET-A-PORTER. Purple is a great color for her, and she has already proven she can rock any print.  For a classic look with a twist, we equally love this Temperley London Purdey Dress, ($1,295, also  NET-A-PORTER). For inauguration day we think the perfect pick for the First Lady would be this Carolina Herrera Aubergine Pleated Dress ($2,790, Neiman Marcus).

For everyday wear, we know Michelle loves J.Crew and has been spotted in brightly colored pants and form-fitting cardies, so we think these City-fit Luxe Trousers, $69.50, in saffron yellow, paired with the Victoria Ruffle Shirt,$89.50, both from J.Crew is the perfect mix of her classy but fun style. To top it off, we would add this Abstract Flower Pin ($22.50 Express) to show off her ability to skillfully accessorize.  We also think the First Lady would look chic yet approachable in this It’s-My-Party Polka Dot Skirt ($168, Anthropologie) paired with the Robert Rodriquez Cashmere Cardigan ($216, Nordstrom). No word yet on weather the First Lady-Elect will request our stylist services, but either way, we think that when it comes to fashion, she can.

Trend Alert: The Boyfriend Jean

Over the past few years we’ve seen jean styles go from flare to straight leg, skinny to ultra skinny, and now, skin-tight leggings have practically replaced jeans altogether!  For spring, the collections of Miss Sixty, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Diesel Black Gold all featured the boyfriend jean, adding a breath of fresh air to our thighs and to the evolution of this wardrobe staple.

We’ve found the look at a variety of different price points and styles, so anyone can rock the boyfriend jean!

We love the destroyed wash of the classic American Eagle Favorite Boyfriend Jean, only $29.50, and the Silence & Noise Boyfriend Jean from Urban Outfitters, now on sale for $39.99 (was $74), for the cropped look. The Victoria’s Secret Low Boyfriend Jean makes this baggy trend sexy for $59.90. The washed Levis 501 Boyfriend Jean, $168 at Free People, is perfect for those who love the hippie style, and Sarah Jessica Parker has been spotted in this pair of Current / Elliot Boyfriend Jean in Hickory Stripe, available on Singer22.com for $219. Or, for an authentic look, scour your boyfriend’s closet!

To finish the look, sport a form-fitting tee or tank with heels to add a touch of femininity, a black blazer to dress up the jeans, or pair them with an oversized tee and Converse sneakers to achieve a grunge-inspired look.

Trend Alert: Leopard Print

One of the prominent trends spotted on the spring 2009 runway was most definitely leopard print. We saw the wild design in a spectrum of colors and speckled across everything from Louis Vuitton bags to Zac Posen dresses. Whether it’s a cocktail party or a day at the beach, these cool spots will certainly add some spice to your look.

We’ve gone on to find a variety of pieces flaunting this wild print — all for under $150!

The purple leopard print on this Sequin Safari Minidress, ($24.80 Forever 21), updates an otherwise ordinary going out dress, while the Leopard Lawn Annette Blouse, ($78, J.Crew), vamps up a modest look. Trend Alert (The Emmys): Not Your Grandma’s Bling!

This year at the Emmy Awards, Fashion Pulse discovered that the red carpet twinkled and sparkled with various gems and baubles not found on the hottest prime-time celebs’ necks, wrists, or ears. Instead, we found quite a bit of bling on their gowns! Lauren Conrad made her own simply-designed dress memorable and unique with the addition of a diamond flower brooch. Stars like Holly Hunter and Brooke Shields also went from boring to dazzling with the same brooch trend, and others, such as Hayden Panettiere, Heidi Klum, and Kate Walsh simply radiated with their gem-encrusted frocks.

Previously, we considered the perfect placement for brooches to be inside our grandmother’s jewelry box or at vintage shops, but as we learned from the Emmys last night, it’s time to bring the trend back! We found some inexpensive and stylish pins so you can be the belle of the ball (or office), too! Affix this Black Studded Brooch from Mango to a dress to add a gothic feel for $29. A pink or yellow Flower Brooch from Jessica McClintock is perfect for spring ($32). Next, this Forever 21 Studded Bow Pin ( $7.80) is chic and classy, while the Faux-Quartz Star Pin from J.Crew ($65) is sure to make you stand out in a crowd.
