Part II of Maria Eilersen’s on-site coverage for Fashion Pulse Daily of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin!

In the spirit of Berlin, .HBC Couture Design Scouts hosted a collection of cutting edge designers at the 7th Berlin Fashion Week. All eight designers showcased fresh and vibrant color palettes demonstrated through historical references and drawing diverse inspirations. Newcomers Blame, Manuela Baumgartner, Mogo E Mago and Mikenke satisfied the crowds’s desire to see designs that captured the avant-garde and urban nature of cosmopolitan Berlin. Perhaps an amalgamation of all these qualities was Address, who presented an elegant yet edgy collection with a refined, strong silhouette: combining silk and bold criss crossed cut-outs juxtaposed against simple, classic male looks and i-just-rolled-out-of-bed-yet-still-look-amazing makeup. Another stand-out collection was that of Ester Perbrandt. Her play between drape and construct was truly exquisite and the mix of corals and orange really screamed summer.
And the overall synopsis? Cropped pants are here to stay, simplicity is key in summer and this present economic climate can still facilitate new designers that answer demands for quality, longevity, and most importantly innovative, good design.

Risto
Raw attitude seduced the audience at the Risto pre-collection show on Saturday. The edgy garments pounding down the runway made it hard to believe that Bimbiloski once designed uber-luxury looks for Louis Vuitton. Brazen bike shorts were paired with mesh knits in cream and black, interspersed by angular blazer dresses and shredded white denim donned with gritty poise. Slick brown snakeskin lined black leggings and paneled minis and crop-tops were all the rage. We are definitely looking forward to seeing his full collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York in September!

I’ve had a big crush on anything and everything Helmut Lang these days, hence I wanted to share some of my favorite looks from the fall/winter 2010 collection as well as the fall/winter 2010 denim collection. It’s just always so chic, so subtle, so metropolitan. Here’s what creative directors Nicole and Michael Colovos had to say about fall/winter 2010:
“This season we were looking at images of architect Santiago Calatrava’s work and were intrigued by his modern structures that he made which evolved out of something more classic. The elements that we were drawn to were the different textures created by the modern and classical worlds. We used textured wools, furs, blistered looking leather, silks crepes and mixed them together with cleaner fabrics to create dimension. We explored volume within structure by adding darts and seams to control the volume and the drape of the fabrics. Prints were made from looking at industrial textures and nature, and exploring the contrast between them. Colors were inspired by old mining factories where there is a heightened sense of the intermingling of industrial and natural elements.”

Frida Weyer
Simple sophistication defined Frida Weyer’s collection this season, comprised of elegantly tailored looks found in a neutral palette. Asymmetrical frocks donned ruched up roses, aptly playing with the nude hues of fabric while subtle sequins and mini-bows accented soft ruffles and draped gowns. Taupe and beige lace galvanized the collection, either layered in gradations or adorned with floral cut-outs to further enliven the otherwise classic looks. In line with the grace and poise of her presentation, Weyer concluded with a series of rich evening gowns, ultimately culminating in a playful-yet-posh wedding dress led down the catwalk by the designer’s adorable daughters.

Guido Maria Kretschmer
In line with the finesse that is sure to dominate SS2011, Guido Maria Kretschmer revamped secretary suits and polished dresses fit for a southern derby. Dynamic high collars modernized the traditional cuts accentuated by carefully crimped hair reminiscent of the 1940s. Ensuring a cohesive, but not bland, collection to take shape before the trendy Berlin crowd, models rocked posh leather gloves and exquisite feathered hats. The palette meandered between earthly nudes and soft pinks dramatized by zestful black and white contrasts. The show reached its zenith with yet another wedding gown fit for an ice princess. The intricacies of an embroidered bodice, full skirt, and fairy tale crown had the audience expecting a prince to whisk the model away on a white horse.

Schumacher
With Mila Jovovich, Schumacher garnered high expectations for the looks to come down the runway. Lacing practicality for the metropolitan woman with a minimalist aesthetic, the designer presented a coherent collection best described as an urban safari. Light shades of gray and sheer materials evoked a sense of effortlessness to this season’s looks, made elegant by a simple up-do fit for both work and play. Accommodating the summer heat that is sure to repeat itself next year, Schumacher’s designs shared loose-cut fabrics in a soft color palette. The collection’s best trends? Definitely the endearingly earth-toned stripes and gray-on-gray layering of sheer textiles.
