Our 6 Best Dressed At The Oscars

by fashion pulse contributor

The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, are held annually in honor of cinematic excellence. Why not bestow awards for sartorial grandeur as well? We tuned in to choose our best dressed (in random order).

1. Jessica Chastain in McQueen: Jessica looked utterly gorgeous in a black and copper strapless gown of stunning hand embroidery. Her fair complexion and half-up hairstyle were equally as divine, as was the fact that she brought her Nana along for the evening!

2. Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood: This midnight blue one-shoulder embellished number was quite the contrast from the much-talked about Elie Saab white jumpsuit Rose recently wore to the SAG Awards. We think she nailed it, yet again, proving that everything we know and love about elegant monochromatic looks reigns true. Did you catch a glimpse of her Chanel fine jewelry as well? To.die.for.

3. Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton: Coral, peplum, cascading ruffles to the floor…this dress is perfection in many ways. We adore Michelle’s choice to to top it all off with dainty jewelry.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford: Rather amazingly, Gwyneth pulled off a cape on the Red Carpet. Could she have been any more statuesque in this all white structured look? The gown was modern-feminine, and the cape was menswear-distinguished in a way that only she knows how to own. OUR WINNER.

5. Cameron Diaz in Gucci: That peachy color and ever-so-slight sequin detail looked so fun and fresh. The skin tight strapless bodice and floor trailing ruffles really upped the glam factor, all the while maintaining Cameron’s one of a kind dynamic personality.

6. Angelina Jolie in Versace: Once again she looked untouchable in an all-black fantastic gown. The super high slit showed a lot of leg, while the pop of volume at the hips pleasantly surprised us. And that red lip…swoon.

Who do you deem the supreme head turner?

5 Updated Takes On The Spring Bow Flat! (thefind Guest Post)

by Julia DiNardo

From our friends at thefind.com:

Back in college, when I wasn’t trudging off to class in my just-slept-in sweats and the closest pair of flip-flops, I swore by my collection of ballerina flats. I had a pair in every color to go with any outfit, I could trek across campus in them comfortably, they could be dressed up or down, and at the time, they were totally trendy. Nowadays, I still need something equally versatile to take me from work to happy hour, but now that the novelty’s worn off, I can’t help but think those classic bow flats are a bit of a snooze. Luckily for me (and all other girls who like to forgo heels on those endlessly long mid-week days), bow flats are back in and getting some overdue stylish updates! Woven textures, suede with metallic details, snake-y prints, and even jellies — these 2011 versions of the bow flat are anything but basic! It’s officially time to swap your practial, boyish oxfords and embrace the feminine (yet still versatile) re-vamped ballerina flat! Pair with the season’s sweetest spring dresses or rolled up paper bag pants.

Vivienne Westwood “Get A Life” Palladium Collection

by Julia DiNardo

I recently wrote about The Palladium Project, a unique design collaboration with bloggers and FIT jewelry students that will be making its debut in the spring, and in the meanwhile, I just gained news of Vivienne Westwood’s  “Get A Life” Palladium Collection – with the designs to launch during London Fashion Week in February 2011 and sold exclusively in Vivienne Westwood boutiques in London and Los Angeles in spring 2011.

Dame Vivienne Westwood took nature and paganism as her inspiration for the collection, using shapes and objects such as acorns, and oak trees to represent her message of “Get a Life” — stopping climate change and working to save the planet. Below is a sketch from the collection – more info to come as it becomes available!

Fall Preview: Iodice, Vivienne Westwod Anglomania, Stewart + Brown, Contrarian

by fashionpulse

It seems only last week  I was bemoaning New York’s dreary winter and previewing summer styles, but the arrival of spring means it is time to look ahead…to another season of unpredictable weather, fall/winter 2010. Luckily enough, at a press preview a few weeks ago, the F/W 2010 collections we saw sustained the vigor of summer with bright colors and vivacious prints; those in favor of darker tones kept our hopes up with their clean sophistication.

To start, Iodice, one of Brazil’s most prominent brands, showed its range with a collection that ventures into elegant evening wear, party dresses in head-turning primary colors and maxi dresses in prints certainly reminiscent of summer. For those in need of a reminder of the bygone summer during the fall season, Iodice’s brightly-colored, intricate prints are sure to invigorate you as you struggle against the cold wind.

Also bringing colors and prints to the fall is Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, the American line from Britain’s favorite punk label. Colorful abstract prints, elaborately patterned tights, pink pants and yellow plaid: this is a label for the spirited and rebellious who have fun all-year round. If you’re looking for glamour rather than adventure, the line also offers beautifully draped satin tops and refined cocktail dresses made to impress but not too high on the shock factor.

Environmental protection is certainly in style  all-year round, but Stewart + Brown promises more than organic cotton: for Fall 2010, the California brand evokes a confident and conscientious student who values comfort as much as sophistication. Youthful yet polished, simple yet refined, the brand itself exudes a sense of natural serenity – and, of course, there’s also the fact that it also uses renewable, biodegradable fabrics.

This is one of the rare posts where Fashion Pulse Daily gives a dictionary definition: contrarian, someone who rejects the majority view. It also happens to be a clothing label that at the first glance does not seem to fit into the definition very well, but it only takes a few more looks to see that the Contrarian girl does indeed beg to differ. The simplicity belies this true mission: every Contrarian piece is appropriate for the office and nothing reminiscent of Lady Gaga, but the rebellion is in the details – black skirts with asymmetrical cuts, super-wide-leg trousers, trench coats with oversized collars, cropped hoodies. That it was masterminded by a mother-daughter team speaks something about the label: a contrarian, undoubtedly, but also one who is able to seamlessly transition from one generation to another, from Wall Street to Madison Avenue.
