Trends from the 90’s have made successful reappearances on the runway over the past few seasons, but the return of the aesthetics of the decade doesn’t merely stop at clothing. More recently, iconic beauty trends worn on 90’s icons like Kate Moss, Drew Barrymore, and Winona Ryder have made significant comebacks in the beauty industry. The most prominent of these trends include berry lipstick, metallic and blue eye shadow, glossy lips, lip liner, and lower lid eyeliner.

Berry lipstick was the ultimate shade choice of the 90’s; to channel this look yourself, try Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipstick in Gone Greige, available online at Ulta, or Bite Beauty’s Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Jam, available online at Sephora.  Pair lip colors with a shiny top coat via Glossier’s newest Lip Gloss, available now at Glossier.com. Another beauty staple of the decade was heavily lined lips, usually a shade or two darker than the wearer’s lipstick color. Duplicate the look or truly make it your own with  Bite Beauty’s Lip Pencil in 084 or 042 (available online at Sephora). Inky to bright cobalt blue and daring metallic shadows have both made a triumphant return with the launch of Pat McGrath’s Dark Star 006 in Ultraviolet Blue, available online at Sephora. For lower lid liner, be sure to check out Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer, available online at Marc Jacobs Beauty.

Judging from the recent runway shows for the upcoming spring/summer 2017 season, next spring will definitely be the perfect time to try out that bold lip color or vibrant eyeshadow that you’ve been hesitant to use in the past. The beauty trends from this most recent fashion week season are anything but subtle, with looks ranging from solid glitter lips to bright and bold eyeshadow that stretches way beyond the eyelids.

Classic looks like the timeless red lip also made a major statement on many prominent runways. One of the most notable trends that has taken off in runway shows all over the globe is the use of glitter. Bold looks even took over at New York Fashion Week, which is more known for showcasing extremely minimal, no-makeup beauty looks on its runways. Despite this however, DKNY’s show a few weeks ago had one of the most talked-about beauty looks overall. The makeup for the show was done by reknowned makeup artist Pat McGrath, who used the DKNY runway to showcase her most recent release, the currently sold out Lust 004 Lipstick Kit. The look is made up of a red lipstick base with pressed glitter on top, making for a truly show-stopping look. The glitter did not only show up on lips, but also in eyeliner, as seen at Versace, and in painted-on embellishments in various geometric shapes, as seen at Giamba.

Following along with the boldness of heavy glitter is the use of bold, colorful eyeshadow, which at many shows was applied also along the cheekbones as highlighter, as well as extending across the eyelids. At Victoria Beckham, emerald green and cobalt blue shadow made a huge statement, and was fresh and unusual compared to what the designer would normally choose for makeup looks. At Louis Vuitton and Max Mara, similar eye definition was used, but even more dramatic. Vibrant hues of green and orange were glided along both the cheekbones and eyelids at Max Mara, which was a perfect fit within its tropical-inspired collection. At Louis Vuitton, a sleek cat-eye in black liner was complimented by deep navy shadow, which extended far over the brows. Finally, among the abundance of bold glitter and vibrant eyeshadow, the classic red lip proved that it’s here to stay, making appearances on runways like Jason Wu, Cushnie et Ochs, and Creatures of the Wind. At Cushnie et Ochs, the look was slightly updated, and was actually two-toned. The top lip was done in a timeless red shade, and the bottom in a more vibrant pink-red.

Pastel colors are definitely not a new idea or a particularly groundbreaking trend at that, but for spring/summer 2017 London designers are putting a spin on the traditionally super-feminine and ultra sweet color palette. Collections that can be considered staples of London Fashion Week such as  Victoria by Victoria Beckham, Christopher Kane, Anya Hindmarch, Simone Rocha, and J.W. Anderson all showed versions of pieces in classic pastel tones of largely pale pink, blue, lavender, green, and yellow, but this time around, they took a darker, and much edgier twist. On the Victoria, Victoria Beckham runway, a crisp shirt and shorts set was shown in pastel yellow, but paired with dark denim slides, and a bold graphic print displayed different areas of California, from which the collection was inspired. Christopher Kane wanted the girls walking his runway to look edgy and sexy for his collection entitled ‘Make Do and Mend. He showed a pale pink dress with intense black lace detailing, and paired it with bold embellished leather gloves and shoes.

Arguably the most notable is Anya Hindmarch, who showcased her always creative collection highlighting handbags on a circular runway inspired by math and geometric shapes. A solid portion of the collection was done in pastel shades, but each piece was unsurprisingly unique and complimented by naturally, the quirkiest of accessories. Coats were a major strong suit for Hindmarch, a highlight being a lavender oversized coat embellished with shape detailing and shown with a pale green body suit underneath, coupled with angular, pointed heels. On the J.W. Anderson runway, long, streamlined silhouettes in blue and pink ombré pastels were shown layered with slashed, puff-sleeved blouses and chunky leather shoes.

Velvet for the spring/summer season is perhaps the most unconventional trend we saw at this most recent New York Fashion Week, but definitely a look to get on board with. Designers paired luxurious crushed velvet and silk fabrics with classic warmer weather silhouettes and color palettes, ultimately capturing an effortless, yet unusual, summer vibe. Victoria Beckham’s is among the most noteworthy of these collections, largely for her great use of color. We’re used to seeing velvet in dark shades of grey or black, maroon, and navy, which were visible, but now they have been accompanied by vibrant turquoise, lavender, and silver tones. Sander Lak, the designer behind Sies Marjan, showed velvet fabrics in bold burnt orange and pastel shades of blue and pink, while keeping to the flowing, draped shapes that have been a go-to this season.

Another popular look for spring/summer 2017, one that is more frequently associated with the warmer months of the year, has proven to be the nautical stripe print. Designers such as Lela Rose, Rosie Assoulin, Zimmermann, and Red Valentino made beachy, seaside stripes an integral part of their most recent collections. Lela Rose took a more upscale approach to the usually casual style, incorporating the stripes look in red, navy and white onto classic summer gowns. Rosie Assoulin’s entirely beach themed collection featured cheery striped sundresses shown within a set of palm trees and beach lounge chairs, totally encompassing the summer mood.

Click through the slideshow to see our other top picks for two of the most prominent, and contrasting, trends this spring/summer season.
