Suno Sneakers: Giving Back to Kenya

by fashion pulse contributor

Prints are popping up all over for spring, so why not try them on your feet? The Limited Edition SUNO Sneakers ($65) are owning this trend in their kanga-inspired prints, as colorful as they are powerful.

SUNO is a New York-based womenswear label that offers a global view of the luxury world in an exciting way. Both sneaker styles, classic tennis shoes and the lace-up, are produced in Kenya with soles made from entirely recycled rubber. For every pair purchased, a portion of proceeds will be donated to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a Kenyan orphanage for baby rhinos and elephants (how cute!). Available in sizes 5-11.

Suno Resort 2012 Collection

by Julia DiNardo

[All Images Courtesy of Suno]

As one who has never been afraid of prints, Suno truly appeals to my colorful and bold side of dressing. The brand, which started just in 2008 by Max Osterweis, inspired by his Kenyan textile collection, the brand continues to bring the garments full circle from the original sentiments by employing expert Kenyan tailors to execute the designs. Enjoy my top picks from the resort 2012 collection!

A MUST: The Webster Miami

by Julia DiNardo

As previously mentioned, my best friend and I went to South Beach for a long weekend girls getaway, which resulted in fun in the sun, AMAZING food, and last but not least, shopping. Miami has it’s share of specialty chain, high-end, and boutique shops, however the place I was most excited about checking out was The Webster. The gorgeous three-level art deco boutique which I believe used to be a hotel houses an incredibly cool mix of sportswear with luxury goods in a nonchalant, approachable manner that I have yet to truly encounter in my hometown of NYC. Upon entering the boutique, visitors are greeted by a bar on the left of the “lounge area” which offers drinks of the alcoholic and caffeinated variety, as well a small staircase to the contemporary and sportswear section where favorites from Tom Binns, Suno, Acne, Lisa Marie Fernandez, and more can be found.

I rarely see so many superstars of luxury fashion on racks next to each other in an independent boutique setting; I loved perusing the offerings from Chanel, Lanvin, and Balenciaga, which ranged from apparel to accessories and footwear.  Upon confessing my love of Balenciaga to a sales associate, he insisted I try on the shoes, even though I made it clear I wasn’t about to drop at least $800 on shoes that day. He also found a gorgeous pair of wedges for my friend, and showed us some of the latest bags in interesting fabrications and shapes.  And it wasn’t because he thought he was going to get a sale out of us; it was genuine and quite evident that he truly loved fashion and sensed a kindred spirit, and was sincerely proud of The Webster’s unique positioning and offerings.

F/W 2011 Collections: Malandrino, Y-3, Suno

February 13th, proved to be yet another successful day at Fashion Week.  Three stand-out designers were Malandrino,Y-3, and Suno, who all brought varying forms of design to the table.  Malandrino used her French advantage to the fullest, with furs and evening dresses in deep jewel tones.  The dresses were not only exquisite, but figure flattering with strategic ruching, enhanced décolletage, and empire waists.  Y-3, a performance based label by Yoji Yamato, took the design aesthetic to a whole other level.  The clothes looked like they could be used to deter the elements rather than to conquer the elliptical.  The styles were both militaristic and pioneered with protective shapes covering the body.  On the contrast, Suno a 2-year-old label was a exploration of timelessness— with their inspiration found in the elderly.  With wallpaper like prints and a sophisticated palette with pops of bright colors, the tunics and skirts were anything but dapper, and always, ultra-chic.
