The 80’s have seemingly been this season’s biggest trend, as elements from the decade have popped up in every city throughout fashion month. In New York, color seemed to play the biggest role on the runway, and many designers like Marc Jacobs, Carolina Herrera, and Adam Selman opted for vibrant, 80’s inspired hues as opposed to subtle neutrals. At Tibi, a collection inspired by cities and architecture, featured bright orange, yellow, and blue, all in oversized, relaxed silhouettes. Jeremy Scott, who is often influenced by the 80’s decade, showed a sci-fi inspired collection featuring tracksuits, neon accessories, and puffer jackets in bold colors and metallic finishes.

When I think of the culotte, the first thing that comes to mind is a fond memory of my grandmother in a vibrantly hued, polyester version, and the second thing I think of is…pass. There’s no denying that this summer we saw the rise in hemlines when it came to denim, mimicking a culotte-like frayed and abbreviated flair, and with the arrival of spring 2017, the trend gets pushed even further, popping up as the “it” length for pants of all kinds. The most essential element to pull of this look without looking too costumey or unintentionally retro is to balance it with the right footwear.

Streamlined, sturdy, and simple are the best sole mates for the look, be it in a sandal, sneaker, or even boot. A simple strap across the toe and ankles, a classic white leather or canvas sneaker, or a slick boot, slim enough to slip inside the wide pant leg will be your best footwear alliances with the look. The hardest part is re-imagining your entire silhouette, and feeling truly comfortable with it. Regardless of if you “do the culotte” or not, there is no slowing down the direction of fashion, which, for the first time in a long time, is heading in a much wider leg direction (think gaucho pants).

It is, however, worth the effort, so that you can wear the incredibly cool versions from Timo Weiland, Whit, Banana Republic, Kuho, and J.Crew!

NYFW Fall 2016 Trend Report: Fashion on the Prairie

by Julia DiNardo

Something particular, and even possibly considered a bit odd found its way down the runway for fall 2016.  A mix of 1930s and 1970s, a little bit country, and a touch of gypsy seemed to appear by way of tiered, ruffled skirts, blouses, and dresses, in silhouettes that were anything but body-hugging, largely found in fluid, light weight silks that skimmed the shins, with the occasional, more assertive heavy weight that certainly would have been put to the test during the Dust Bowl era. Perhaps it make sense with the heavy ’70s revival that these are a few of the remaining trends from that decade that haven’t been exploited yet, hence we’re seeing these particular shapes and details again, that could easily be straight out of Little House on the Prairie, the series that ran from 1974-1984, set in the late 19th century.

Of course modern makeup, hair, and nail trends will bring it up to speed, along with accessories and jewelry to round out ‘prairie-inspired’ look, making it less costume-y, and more of a mainstay of the modern fashion look.  See below for some of our favorite runway looks representing this trend:
