The best kind of shopping experiences are the ones that make the most of your time, so I love that I can walk into a T.J.Maxx or Marshalls and pick up a gorgeous wood picture frame, a desktop organizer, throw pillows, a spatula, children’s books, running shoes, and designer leather jacket in one fell swoop. Who has time to go from store to store nowadays? Certainly not many people that I know! Besides the essentials in fashion and home décor, the stores also boast a hearty selection of holiday décor and home furnishings at incredible prices, so you can feel guilt-free when buying that Halloween wreath, reindeer-themed throw blanket, or sea horse lamp.

You’ll of course find seasonless pieces that will move with you from room to room, and even home to home, along with your favorite clothing and accessories for the off-price retailers. “How many pieces of jewelry do you own?” a friend quizzically asked me recently. My response was pretty much along the lines of “I have no clue!” as I’m always on the hunt for a cool new piece, be it vintage or new, at a great price that can look great from season to season,  year to year, without being too tied down to a particular trend or look.  This past week I took the T.J.Maxx and Marshalls Fall Transition Blogger Challenge, which was right in line with favorite kind of adornment, by using accessories as the perfect update to transition one’s wardrobe from summer into fall. With the great selection of high-quality, designer accessories found at the stores, it’s easy to make a quick yet meaningful enhancement to your look without taking up too much space in your closet.

As I shopped for pieces to style from a summer to fall perspective, I generally went for baubles that struck a chord with my fashion sensibility, but also sought out jewelry that had a substantial texture to them that could work well against filmy garments and warmer layers alike. I also was selective about my color choices, opting for more all-over gold or silver tone accessories while keeping the colorful pieces slightly more muted, so they weren’t so heavily reminiscent of summer brights and fall/winter neutrals.

And the Oscar for Best Dressed Goes to…

There was plenty of stunning competition for the best dressed last night, and  as part of the T.J.Maxx and Marshalls Oscars Blogger Challenge, I zeroed in on my favorite trend from the Oscars. There’s just such a sense of incredibly sharp style and timelessness with black and white on the red carpet, so I chose to channel the graphic color combination in my look, while shopping at TJMaxx.com and MarshallsOnline.com.

It wasn’t hard to find a bunch of terrific options, as the stores carry high quality, on-trend brand name and designer fashion! It’s no surprise that the classic colors were a hit last night, since the spring 2014 runways heavily showed pieces that were a mixture of the shades.

My black and white inspiration from the Oscars started with Meryl Streep,who looked liked the definition of elegance in the color combo (by Lanvin), and for the guys, what could be more exemplary than the Dallas Buyers Club co-stars AND oscar winners,  Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto sporting rather striking,  debonair versions of the trend? Pharrell Williams and his wife, Helen Lasichanh really mastered the his and hers, borrowed from the boys trend when it comes to suiting and mixing it up with black and white.

Last, (and my favorite of all),  Olivia Wilde (pictured at top), who is seven months pregnant, looked incredibly soignè in what appeared to be an all-black ensemble, however once she turned around, her stunning Valentino gown revealed a sash-like addition of white silk fabric, which was stylishly matched to a white clutch, earrings, and a slew of bangles. Very chic, indeed.

Starting with a black and white dress, and since I’m not attending a red carpet affair anytime soon, I found ways to make the trend work for every day. Dressing it down with a with a well-fitted moto jacket, I’m ready for virtually any occasion, and thick, opaque tights make it winter weather friendly, shedding them come spring to get extra mileage out of the dress (and the trend). I always go heavy on the jewels,  which is an easy transition to more formal occasions with a black and white dress, and for this, I switched up my outerwear from the purple moto jacket to a velvet bolero (below).

If I wanted to go full “Olivia Wilde” with this, I’d take a cue from her hair and makeup, pinning my hair back into a chic chignon, an elegant cat eye ( I did cat eye frames instead), and pale, matte pink lip.
