Gaining Aesthetic Confidence

by Julia DiNardo

j2

Ah, the elusive white jeans…when the perfect cut, thickness of fabric, and size has been located, it’s a killer look. However white jeans can be so…unforgiving, hugging every curve, and concealing..nothing. To me, they are the great sartorial paradox of looking amazing, but hold the potential to make one extremely self-conscious while wearing them. Just the very nature of them being so stark white makes one’s every move a strategy- where to sit, what to eat, even what handbag or shoes to wear is crucial, as these accessories can potentially  leave rub-off marks on the jeans.

At the end of the day, when the perfect pair is find, they are worth the preventive measures, and making peace with what may happen to them, letting go and enjoying the look, is all part of the process. In working with Marshalls recently, I spoke with stylist Estee Stanley about identifying personal goals and tips to find, and relish in confidence. Clothing truly has so much to do with it, and finding your own personal style, pieces you love, that work best with your individual body is essential to the process. For me, wearing these white jeans in a cut that works with my petite frame, being neither too tight nor too lose and taking a cavalier attitude to them achieves that, and I’m going to incorporate into my wardrobe weekly, so stay tuned for more personal looks featuring them!

Back to my conversation with Estee, she reiterated that “what you wear is a powerful tool to convey who you are and how the world perceives you; what you are wearing makes a huge statement of who you are. Look AND feel confident, dress and feel comfortable, and ALWAYS wear something that you LOVE!”  In an independent survey down by Marshalls, 42% of women identified looking and feeling their best as something that would help propel them towards their goal, and I couldn’t agree more. Remember to “dress for your body type, and ignore trends, ” Stanley emphasizes. “Make a statement with the story you are telling with your outfit and don’t feel what you don’t feel happy in. There is so much fashion out there that there are amazing clothes for all body types. Have the guts to go into the dressing room and try stuff on; items look completely different on the hanger than they do on your body.”

I think that it’s important to be accepting and accommodating to our bodies, and reward ourselves with clothing that fits our shapes and lifestyles to a T. If you’ve lost weight, gained weight, have “baby weight,” and don’t feel like yourself, find clothes that work with that new body of yours, instead of resist it. Choose items that make you feel confident and powerful for every stage of life that you’re in.  Considering being your best version of yourself by dressing the part; white jeans, here I come!

If you bumped into your idol, the person you most admire, or would be star struck by today, would you be ashamed or confident in what you are wearing? I know it’s a bit of an extreme question, but one time it happened to me, and all I could focus on was what I had on, and wished that I was wearing something else, as the look wasn’t representative of me and my style.

“Networking is something you should be doing anywhere and everywhere and all day long,” shares career expert Nicole Williams. “Which is why you always want to feel good with what you’re wearing when you head out the door – you never know when you’ll meet someone with shared professional interests.”

So right you are Nicole, and although a full-on wardrobe overhaul can be daunting, I find it easiest to start off with the smaller details.

I’m all about the quality accessories, and luckily, for over 40 years (yes, 40!) Marshalls has been providing a great selection of designer heels and handbags to make your go-to pieces in your closet even more extraordinary. Above via the slideshow, you’ll find some fabulous pieces, mainly accessories, new to Marshalls for the fall that I think you’ll absolutely love, as there are not only stylish, but also provide a plethora of options for both work and play.

Which piece is your favorite?

Heading to the Office? Work It!

by Julia DiNardo

Dressing for a professional setting doesn’t mean you need to dress drab, boring, or devoid of those style elements that make you…you! I wouldn’t exactly call this my “boss lady” outfit, but rather my “ready for anything” outfit, from a meeting or conference to a power lunch, an interview, and catching up with friends after the work day is done for some good food and spirits. Dressing with confidence is the most important way to accomplish your daily musts and goals with gusto,  and according to a survey that Marshalls did of 1,000 women nationwide, a staggering “71% of women wish they were more confident,” while “61% of women employed full-time say they have a “go-to” item of clothing that they wear to instantly boost their confidence.”  Do you have a said “go-to” item that you wear to work?

I Like It! It’s Kind of Grungy…

by Julia DiNardo

julia grungy

The subject line for this was taken directly from Fashion Pulse Hubby when he saw me in this outfit, which was an aha! moment for me in describing it in a straight forward form. It’s kind of grungy, but still works clean lines and a bit of femininity into it as well. I wish I could dress this effortlessly every day, but it’s so easy to make this look business meeting appropriate by merely swapping out my 8-eye Dr Martens out for a pair of patent leather black pumps. A bit of pleating and a white, fitted perforated leather jacket really lends an au courant quality to the look while my um (unintentional) roots, Ray-Bans, ribbed tights and of course, boots, feel a bit retro and certainly street-style worthy.

Have you rocked the Docs in an unconventional way?
