As a self-declared fashion addict, I gobble up everything from the visual to the literature when it comes to subject, and feel strongly that my duty is to make share my encounters with these forms of media so that others can be enlightened and enriched as well. Two exhibits that have had quite a strong impression on me as of late are “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and “Jewels by JAR” at The Met.

Seeing these amazing compilations of these designers’ work is truly worth a trip to New York City if you don’t reside in the area, as my scant array of images barely suffices to immerse you in them.  Below, a condensed synopsist of each one:

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk (now through February 23, 2014)

If you think you know the major design tropes of Jean Paul Gaultier; think again! This traveling exhibit, which finally has landed in Brooklyn, possesses a wide span of his work, broken into themes rather than chronologically, explored his incredible range and inspiration,  which stretched far beyond the concepts of nautical, corsets, and religious motifs. Sure, you’ll find the corset Madonna wore on the Blonde Ambition tour (pictured above), but also an ode to cultures and myths around the globe such as tribute to Africa, India, punk can can, sirens, and samurai that brings intricate detailing and couture techniques front and center.

Fashion-Related Museum Exhibits Not To Miss

Mark your calendars, book your trips, and get ready to experience fashion, museum-style this spring with a bunch of terrific exhibits, some of which are already in progress!

Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion –  May 10, 2012 – August 19th, 2012, The Costume Institute at The Met, NYC. Peruse the 80 designs on display that are meant to compare and contrast the aesthetics, along with the developing concepts of fashion over time.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, now – through April 15, 2012 The Bard Graduate Center, NYC – view 250 hats like those you’ve never seen before, curated by master milliner Stephen Jones,  which spans centuries of exquisite head wear designs.

IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA (February 10 – April 17), Youthquake! The 1960s Fashion Revolution (March 6 – April 7), at The Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC — rediscover the past, and rethink contemporary fashion and textiles courtesy of the two upcoming FIT museum exhibits.
