Fall 2012 Fashion Week: Donna Karan New York

by Julia DiNardo

Talk about the versatility and stamina of a classic American designer! Donna Karan, whose spring 2012 collection touted a heavy tribal theme, reverted to the ever classic shapes and silhouettes of a high aptitude for strong tailoring and the appreciation for the details in her “WoMAN” collection for fall 2012. “It’s the season of the suit” Karan declared in the program’s notes, and right out the gate, we saw exactly what she meant by the sharp suits and dresses that were at once well cut and sculptural, alluding to the multi-faceted definition of a woman, a question that she asks, “How do you define a woman?” in the beginning of the run of show.

Starting with her Casual Luxe collection and flowing into the formality of the signature line, Karan topped off the looks, literally, with smallish versions of trilby hats, keeping faces exposed and bare to emphasize the complexity of the clothes, a literal interpretation of the “a woman who embraces her many sides.”  The show’s finale, walking to the sound of “I’m Every Woman” by Whitney Houston was both a triumphant and bittersweet wrap to the collection and homage to the singer.

Best of Fashion Week SS12: Accessories

by fashion pulse contributor

New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks have all displayed an array of wish-list worthy accessories.  We’ve covered the SS12 clothing trends, yet accessories are an outfit’s bells-and-whistles. Check out some of our favorites…

Handbags

JCrew (pictured above) absolutely nailed it with their ladylike collection of handbags for spring 2012. Blue, orange, green, yellow…did we mention leopard?! Perfectly practical, but still extremely fashion forward.

Clutches

I simply can’t pick a favorite, so let’s call it a tie. Proenza Schouler (at top) mixed textures to create tweed clutches with chunky chain detail straps, while Chloe mixed accessories to make what looks to be a bracelet-bag combo. Gotta have it!

Shoes

Celine really wowed with their take on the platform heel/pump for the upcoming season. Basic black or the marriage of black and red, simplicity says it all. Even more incredible, with your ankle strapped in, these shoes look totally wearable – dare I even say comfortable?

Sunglasses

Frameless sunglasses at Fendi felt interestingly academic. Deviating away from the line’s normal sexuality, the glasses definitely added to the serious, studious woman, a style rather novel for Fendi.

Jewelry

Bracelets: The stacked multi-colored bangles at Carolina Hererra proved that wrists should not be left naked. The more, the merrier come Spring 2012.

Necklaces: Donna Karan went wild with her tribal-inspired neckpieces strung with wood and plastic. Meanwhile, Givenchy’s statement shark-tooth pendants give “sharp” a double meaning.

Fashion Week SS12 was an accessory-studded event; which piece is your favorite?

NYFW: Donna Karan Travels for Spring 2012

by Julia DiNardo

[All Images Courtesy of ELLE.com]

By the middle of the week, it seemed to be evident that two very distinct color stories were emerging from New York Fashion Week; one, was very poppy and bright, mixing color blocking into technicolor, sporty proportions, while the other was comprised of earth tones such as ochre, beige and solid brown, mixed with abstract prints and dark beads fitting into the tribal category.

Donna Karan executed the latter for spring, in a graphic collection that boasted rouge lips and hard, horsetail like ponytails, swaying vigorously as each model walked past. Burnt oranges and subdued lime gowns came toward the end, however Karan showed a definitive dedication to the clay-hued theme, influenced by the time she’s been spending in Haiti and executed to refined perfection. She did incorporate her functional, cozy Casual Luxe pieces at the beginning of the show, proving that no matter what direction Karan may go each season, she always will provide enduring lifestyle pieces meant for everyday wear.
