10 Odd and Amazing Ingredients Found in Your Favorite Beauty Products

by Julia DiNardo

beauty ingredients -1
davines dede shampoo

[Davines Dede Shampoo with red celery extract: celery surprisingly possesses a lot of elements that we turn to for haircare nourishment, such as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals including vitamin vitamins B6, K, and C, potassium, and folate, making this shampoo a great candidate for all hair types!]

tamanu cleansing oil

[Tamanu & Wild Citrus Cleansing Oil: sounds great but what is tamanu? It is a nut oil comes from a tree of the same name, found largely in South East Asia that has been used to treat a variety of skin issues, from acne to rashes, psiorasis, very dry skin and anti-aging concerns. It's known for its rapid healing properties, so no matter your skin issue, it may benefit you to give it a try!]

leaders cosmetics coconut gel mask

[Leaders Coconut Gel Mask with Tomato: sure, we get that coconut makes sense as an ingredient for it's anti-bacterial and hydration properties, but tomato? How does that fit in? Again, antioxidants are the key ingredient; the lycopene found in tomatoes acts as an anti-inflammatory, quelling skin issues and protecting from environmental damage, such as exposure to light.]

fresh honey mask

[Fresh Crème Ancienne® Ultimate Nourishing Honey Mask: honey is one of my most favorite beauty ingredients, and although this one may be more recognizable than the rest of the products here, it still receives a mention for how amazing it can be to the skin, and has increasingly been growing in popular as a skin treatment. The honey gives intense hydration and a protective skin veil to lock in the benefits that can increase the suppleness and elasticity of the skin.]

facial radiance pads -1

[First Aid Beaut Facial Radiance Pads: Indian Gooseberry. These pads are meant for daily use to exfoliate, tone, and brighten, and Indian Gooseberry, a sour fruit and superfood from India and Southeast Asia does it part by fighting inflammation and is a great source for vitamin C, this contributing to the toning and brightening elements of this product.]

minu hair serum

[Davines Minu Hair Serum with caper blossom extract: not only are capers a highly desired ingredient of Mediterranean cuisine, but also offer benefits in the shower as well. Capers are also a crucial antioxidant that include components that may have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, while its iron and vitamin B serve to protect color-treated hair and encourage growth and shine.]

malie organics plumeria

[Mālie Organics Plumeria Body Cream: kukui -- I hate to play favorites, but kukui oil is a bit of a hidden gem and is one of the most versatile, gentle, and healing ingredients I've ever encountered. Indigenous to and considered the state tree of Hawaii, kukui comes from the kukui/candlenut tree, and has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes, but also has tremendous skin benefits for everything from bug bites to dry skin, burns, dermatitis and even psoriasis. For this product, it's combined with coconut and macademia nut oils for superior moisturization.]

sephora micellar cleanser

[Sephora Collection Micellar Cleansing Water & Milk in Charcoal: like honey, charcoal is trending pretty heavily in the beauty world, but thought to include it so that an explanation could be provided for its benefits. It's not suited for all skin types, and is meant to purify and detoxify, filters and adsorbs micro-toxins in the air or skin. If your skin tends to be oily and/or if you have acne issues, give it a go; micellar water is a waterless cleanser, which may be a gentle way to first try it.]

elizabeth arden white tea

[Elizabeth Arden White Tea Fragrance: various forms of tea in beauty products is nothing new, but with this latest fragrance launch, the spotlight is on white tea especially. Again, it contains antioxidant and anti-aging properties, it is one of the least-processed teas and thus retains a lot of its essential nutrients and benefits.]

agave lip balm

[Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm -- We've known agave nectar to be a more natural alternative to processed sugar, but it has beauty benefits that reach beyond a few drops of the syrup in your coffee cup. When used in the beauty industry in its more raw plant form, it's known to be hydrating, conditioning, and well, isn't that just sweet?]

I oftentimes see unconventional yet efficacious ingredients in beauty products when I travel to far off locales, but more and more, I’ve noticed that some of my favorite brands have been utilizing some unusual ones as the key ingredient. What kind of ingredients am I referring to, exactly? Try tomato, celery, capers, agave, and kukui oil, for starters! They may sound like unlikely heroes in your star beauty and hair products, but just wait until you hear what they have in them and how they can help! See the slideshow above for the 10 products, and below for the shoppable links.

Fashion Pulse Flash: New From Dove, Korres Suncare, Davines, more

by Julia DiNardo

I’ve been doing a lot of testing these days but writing? Not so much.  Here’s the lowdown on all of the fabulous, new items that I took for a test drive, and give two thumbs up for you to buy and try:

dove summer care

Skin in the summer oftentimes calls for a little something extra; if you think about it, being in the sun drastically, and quickly changes the skin’s texture and moisture level. It’s important to hydrate, and slough away dead skin cells during this time, and of course, Dove just gets it. The Limited Edition Dove Summer Care line comes in body wash or beauty bar form, smells zesty and citrusy (with vanilla and amber mixed in), and ever so lightly cleanses and exfoliates to further enhance your beautiful skin. I tested it out in the shower this morning, and it was so gentle that you barely even realize there’s some light exfoliation happening. Yes!

The Dove Limited Edition Summer Care will be available in food, drug, club, and online retailers this month, with the 22 fl oz body wash around $6.99, and a six-pack of beauty bars at $8.39.
