When I first went to Mexico in the early 2000s, I visited a market and fell in love with the gorgeously tooled leather bags and embroidered garments that I saw, eventually yielding to the purchase of a bag and top. This variety of artisanal, handcrafted designs that can make a garment or accessory really special have become de rigueur this spring, appearing on everything from bomber jackets to gowns, mules to smartphone cases. Appliqués and embroidery are certainly nothing new to fashion, but the placement of them on interesting silhouettes and found in fresh color palettes have revived this type of adornment to feel ultra fresh and modern.  See the slideshow above for over a dozen examples of this trend that are the quintessential statement piece for spring/summer 2017.
