The Best of Eye Primers

by fashion pulse contributor

[Image by Julia DiNardo; backstage at the Betsey Johnson Spring 2013 show]

Of course you have your eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara,  application routine down pat but what about adding an eye primer into the mix? Like any kind of primer, eyelid-specific primer is used as a base layer for your eyeshadow to make sure it stays put and looks fresh all day long. Similar to concealer most brands offer a selection of hues that you can select for the eyelid primer  based on a match for your skin type, while others have an all-encompassing shade that works well on a variety of skin types and shades.. The real difficulty comes down to finding one that works for you, at a price point you’re willing to do. Dont worry, we are here to help! Selected below are top picks that will give you the ultimate bang for your buck.

e.l.f. (eyeslipsface) is a good, inexpensive option that  you will love to keep in your beauty armada.  The e.l.f. Essential Eyelid Primer costs just $1, and comes in four shade options; several of them have some shimmer to them, hence clear is our absolute, versatile, favorite.  The e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer, $3, is 100% mineral based with no parabens,  preservatives, or chemical dyes, available in two shades (sheer or blush), and is an important tool to keep mineral eyeshadow, which is known to quickly fade, in place all day long.

NARS Cosmetics is a favorite over here at FPD, so the brand’s Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is constantly in-hand! It  has a slightly thicker, but still lightweight, translucent consistency that is perfect of keeping eyeshadow from creaseing and smudging. Plus, the product uses polymer and mineral power to cling to color and reduce blemishes. At $24 it is a bit more of an investment, but trust us; it’s worth it for a long-lasting look.

bareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer, $18, not only helps preserve your eye makeup, but also gives your eyes a little highlighting action. You can choose between a gold or pearl sheen to revamp your color, whether you choose to wear it with or without eyeshadow. The product is, of course, made with 100% bare minerals and vitamins, so it is great for sensitive skin too.

LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer, $21, takes a slightly different approach; first, it is packaged in a slanted tube rather than a footed wand, so you apply it directly to the lid for a clean and controlled application. It is also made without oils, fragrances, dyes, and parabens, meaning it is absolutely ideal for those with skin issues.

Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube, $20, produces a primer that comes in a variety of colors from shimmery gold and sheer nude to matte tawny. Depending on your style and outing, Urban Decay is sure to have a primer to match. The product is also meant to be multipurpose, used as a brow bone or inner eye highlighter.

Tested: the Urban Decay Glide-On Shadow Pencil

by fashionpulse

Introducing Urban Decay‘s newest way to apply eyeshadow: the 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencil.  With crease-proof and waterproof characteristics, this new launch of eye shadows (available in an array of colors ranging from metallic black to jade green, to golden bronze and more) will cause a revolution in eyeshadow substances.  The pigment is stored inside a jumbo-pencil in a creamy, slightly crayon-like substance and is easily applied like normal eyeliner to complete any desired effect.  Plus, it is formulated without the use of parabens. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t smudge, lasts well into the night, easy to blend, and unlike other cream-based eye shadows, this one really doesn’t cause creases that can ruin your look – it works with you, not against you.

Beauty Buzz: Get the Zac Posen Spring 2009 Purple Lipstick Look

by Julia DiNardo

Before and After

We’ve still got Zac Posen’s s/s ’09 collection on our minds, and it’s not just because of the fabulous clothes. We were intrigued by his use of electric purple lipstick contrasted against the pale pink garments, that made even the sweetest-faced models look fierce, and of course instantly cool. Beauty experts agree that purple is the new “it” color for makeup this season, so we decided to put our favorite sheer lip gloss aside, and try this bold new look. 00160m

We found out that MAC did the makeup for the Zac Posen show, so in order to truly mimic the look, we first filled in our lips with the MAC Magenta Lip Pencil, ($13, Macy’s), as a defined base. Layered over the pencil, we took the big step and coated our lips with a thick and even stroke of the nearly black MAC ‘Cyber’ Lipstick ($14, also Macy’s). To soften the intense color and to add shine, we finished with a few finger dabs of the fuchsia MAC ‘Violetta’ Pro Lipstick, that can be found at MAC Pro stores (7 West 22nd St. in New York), or you can substitute with the Urban Decay Trainwreck Lipstick ($22,Sephora).

After our transformation, our reflection in the mirror was barely recognizable, but we loved it! To get  the complete Zac Posen look, use a neutral colored eyeshadow, like a slightly shimmery brown, to make the purple really pop. MAC also created a light pink lip style for the show using MAC ‘Viva Glam II’ Lipstick, and MAC ‘Nymphette’ Tinted Lipglass, both $14 at Macy’s. However, if you’re looking to spice it up, or reinvent your habitual style, we think the purple lip is the perfect way to do it!

Fashion Pulse Obsession: Urban Decay Santa Tanita Body Bronzer

by fashionpulse

We get a bit scared of products that can potentially turn our skin blotchy — and orange. This Santa Tanita Body Bronzer by Urban Decay ($28, Sephora) comes in mousse form, which is an interesting, and in our opinion, helpful way to apply self-tanner. Its foamy, not streaky, and is easy to apply, with virtually no mess to worry about afterwards. Plus, it doesn’t give a super-dramatic color change, the color is gradual so that you don’t go into the office pasty as Elmer’s glue one day, and with an extremely tropical glow the next!
