Rhythmical mixing-and-matching helps comprise the silky, vintage-inspired, and somewhat uncanny Spring 2012 collection created by Tucker. As stated by designer Gaby Basora, “the Tucker Spring 2012 collection is based on a South American woman who ran a vaudeville theater, the royal Tanenbaums, and traveling troupes of performers.”

A peek at the lookbook has me dreaming of travels to an strange land.; the clothes are breezy, with the company’s trademark silk crepe de chine and tailored staples. There is certainly no shortage of prints, patterns, or color either. I adore the delicate florals, crimson polkas, bright tribal ikats, and most of all, the emerald paisley (above).

“I want the clothes to feel mysteriously familiar, like a resurfacing memory you never want to forget.” (Gaby Basora)

For me, Tucker did exactly that for Spring 2012. There is something to this collection that demands musing over.

Now that New York Fashion Week has ended, we’ve had some time to decompress and digest the whirlwind of shows and looks we saw to bring forth Fashion Pulse Daily’s favorite trends for fall 2011. Here are our top picks:

[Naeem Khan Image via Elle.com]

Trend: Red

Despite the fact that this year’s NYFW coincided with Valentine’s Day, among the most favored trends of this Winter/Fall 2011 season is the incorporation of the traditional Asian imperial color, red, in prints, solids, lip color, and eye color. Featured multiple times in shows and presentations by such designers as Naeem Khan, Marchesa, and Alice + Olivia (to name a few), the elegant and classic romanticism of red has returned due to the influx of Asian-inspired themes this season. Marchesa loved red so much that it was incorporated into both the clothing and the eyes while Alice + Olivia used luscious red for lips and as an added flair in smart red shirts and jackets. Without a doubt, red has conquered us all.

-Rose Lou

[Tracy Reese Image via Style.com]

Trend: Pleats

There’s something decidedly feminine and flirty about accordion pleats, and I loved how Tracy Reese and Milly by Michelle Smith incorporated them into their collections. By putting the pleats in such gorgeous, yummy colors, and playing with length, it was at once demure and bold. They took a trend that can feel era-specific and made it very fresh and modern.
-Kaci Hamilton

 [BCBG MaxAzriaImage via Elle.com]

Trend: Sheer

Sheer dresses, blouses, and skirts were seen on the runway but perhaps not quite overwrought or displayed in a typical fashion. Despite being sheer, each look still appeared to have a covered-up quality. The translucent fabrics were often patterned in plaids (Tommy Hilfiger showed a plaid print sheer dress) or stripes like in the BCBG Max Azria dress shown above. The designers in unison played with the transparency of the fabric to make sexy but chic, wearable looks a must for fall.

-Dana deBoer

[Diane von Furstenberg Image via Elle.com]

Trend: Rocker Chic

Sure, we’ve see our fair share of influences and subcultures make their way through the collections and inspiration saunter down the runway, but one that was certainly evident in collections as far ranging as Diane von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang to Diesel Black Gold and Betsey Johnson was one of rocker chic. We now know that the motorcycle jacket has certainly not been put to rest quite yet, and a perfect feminine update to this trend is a vibrant pout in a classic red or berry stain.

Chanel

Chanel S/S 2010 was, hands down, my favorite collection of the season. It managed to be fun yet sophisticated and was showcased amidst farm scenery, though the clothes were not overshadowed by the uniqueness of the down on the farm set. The show had a very “Marie Antoinette” feel to it: a charming and romanticized take on rustic country life full of sweet and delicate dresses paired with a pale color palette of black, red, and blue accents. Though the collection was nothing truly groundbreaking, it stayed true to Chanel’s aesthetic and played up its own trends instead of giving us yet another take on trends we have seen over and over again this season.

Hermès

Tennis was the theme at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2010 Hermès collection. I wasn’t too keen on the idea upon hearing the pitch for the line, but as soon as I saw the clothes — and, of course, the impeccable bags — I quickly changed my mind. Gaultier delivered a sophisticated, timeless collection for Hermès that is on-trend without veering too far overboard nor disposable once the next season rolls around. Each piece was beautiful, wearable, and effortless, from the tennis skirts to the silver chain-linked belts.

Alexander McQueen

Appropriately titled “Plato’s Atlantis,” Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 RTW collection was out of this world and was truly one of my favorite shows of the season. Inspired by mankind’s evolution from the sea and the idea that we may someday return, the dramatic collection featured 10-inch heels, belle-skirt silhouettes, braided asymmetrical hairstyles, aquatic colors, and intricate, digitally printed dresses. Evolution is still stuck in McQueens head, and ours, from the Darwinian-inspired collection that featured large to small taxidermied animals framing the runway. With this collection, McQueen proved he still knows how to put on a show — the hair, makeup, clothing volume (not to mention the shoes!), and overall primitive/futuristic aesthetic were combined in a slightly unsettling, almost scary, way — and the outcome was a brilliantly creative work of art.

The Collective Showroom is a co-op that hosts emerging fashion and jewelry designs. I recently had the opportunity to visit the showroom and meet some designers; below is just a sampling of the talent they had in store!

Magnes Sisters

Yael, Tamar, and Dina – the Magnes Sisters – are behind an awesome handbag collection, which has previously been featured on Fashion Pulse Daily. This time around, we still love them as much as ever! Their popular dry martini bags (folding clutches) were my favorites and came in a variety of colors, fabrics, and prints.

Oblik-Atelier

Mia Hebib is the genius behind Oblik-Atelier and is based out of Brooklyn, NY. Her art-deco (Hebib has an “obsession” with lines)- inspired collection is entirely handmade and limited in production. Oblik-Atelier, which has been featured in magazines such as i-D and Lucky, will soon be gracing the pages of a prominent Swiss magazine in Spring 2010. All of the pieces I saw were interesting, unique, and truly works of art.

Yegang Yoo

Korean-born designer Yegang Yoo (who has previously worked with Vena Cava, Hussein Chalayan, and Rachel Comey) is another emerging fashion talent based out of Brooklyn. Her accessible collection – first launched for fall/winter 2008 – featured awesome custom-made geometric prints, dark colors, draped pieces, and light fabrics, as well as many blazers, shorts, and tunics. I completely fell in love with her unique collection, especially with many of the brilliantly draped dresses!

Saltbox

Saltbox is travel luggage, totes, and cosmetic bags that are sturdy, laid back, and perfect for everyday use. One of the best things about this collection are the unique, crazy wallpaper-like prints – there is truly a design for everyone! The collection is also fairly priced – it’s a relief to find something attractive and well-made that won’t break the bank, let alone perfect for travel. In fact, many of the travel bags feature airplane emblems that, appropriately enough, went through quite the journey themselves: first embroidered, then made out of clay and shipped to India and New Jersey, before being completed and added as the perfect finishing touch to this already unique line of totes. Pick one up today and travel in style!

Shenan

One of the most sought after pieces in this collection, a black crop vest, originally didn’t make the final cut, but was so popular with everyone who saw it that the designer, Shenan Fraguadas, added it back in, and thank goodness for that! This bold and beautiful Brooklyn-based collection is heavy on a vintage-y and rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic, as well as asymmetrics, destruction, crop tops, neutral colors, and floral prints. One of my favorite pieces is a shredded black crop top that would surely add a tough, interesting edge to an otherwise basic outfit.

Fendi

Fendi’s Spring 2010 collection successfully embodied some of my very favorite things: sheer fabrics, raw edges, lots of neutral tones, and a romantic-yet-rough overall aesthetic (not to mention, the runway show was set to my favorite album of the year, The Dead Weather’s ‘Horehound’!). Karl Lagerfeld took the season’s obsession with transparency to a whole new level, all the way down to completely see-through evening clutches. The collection successfully blended toughness and relaxed femininity and the outcome was one of the best Fendi shows in recent years.

Dolce & Gabbana

The design duo’s S/S 2010 show was heavy on the lace in a super charming, incredibly flirty, burlesque-meets-tango sort of way. The mixture of textures and fabrics that one might not initially think would be well meshed (such as denim and lace) turned out to be a hit as the details were impeccable and the collection was true to the house’s Sicilian roots. The show lacked the giant ball gowns that have been prominent in its last few seasons, instead showing a return to form with tailored suits, hotpants, corsets, and mini dresses.

Alberta Ferretti

Romantic chiffon dresses were all the rage at Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer 2010 show. The soft, delicate dresses featured this season’s trendy pastel palette with a few strong splashes of color and embroidery hidden amongst the nightwear-inspired floaty fabrics. Though this season has seen no shortage of gauzy feminine gowns, Ferretti’s are among the best as they are very wearable, beautiful, and timeless.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Giant bunny head bows and pink lips were only two of the elements that made Marc by Marc Jacob’s Spring 2010 collection absolutely adorable. Cute, playful, and true to the brand’s quirky aesthetic, the collection featured a lot of bright colors, zany mixed prints, and 40s-style dresses that came together to create youthful, wearable pieces (especially considering the absence of sky-high platforms!) that somehow manage to fit together perfectly.

Calvin Klein

Francisco Costa retained Calvin Klein’s signature minimalistic aesthetic for Spring 2010 with garments that truly looked like works of art. He was inspired by California fiber artist Ferne Jacobs’ basket work and Calvin Klein’s spring 1994 collection; Costa’s take was very relaxed and natural, giving the garments an organic feel. Loose-fitting dresses, light fabrics, flat Japanese-inspired sandals, earthy tones and crumpled textures all came together to form a refreshing and seemingly simple collection, though the textures and structure were anything but – the needle-punched detailing and subtle layering made this more than your standard minimalistic 90s-throwback collection.

Matthew Williamson

Back to London fashion week in order to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Matthew Williamson introduced a somewhat surprising collection that featured body conscious and modern clothes instead of his signature boho look full of florals and butterfly prints. The clothes were heavy with intricate embellishments, geometric designs (the triangle prints were especially exquisite), metallics, gathered waist skirts/shorts and bright colors. All in all, the show featured a lot of the trends we’ve seen thus far for Spring 2010 collections — nothing too revolutionary and perhaps slightly unfocused — though Williamson’s interpretations are definitely among the best, and of course a collection does not have to be cutting-edge to be good. Very bold, very flashy and very on-trend, the collection however remains completely wearable and feminine, true to Williamson’s roots.

Sass & Bide

Made up entirely of Sass & Bide’s signature black, white, and gold color palette, this show nevertheless remained unique and captivating and is definitely my favorite collection from Sass & Bide in quite a while. From pristine and glamorous chrome-topped Grecian gowns to harem pants to (my personal favorite) metal leggings, the clothes are reminiscent of the ancient Egyptians and Aztecs, creating a futuristic warrior-chic feel and are able to separate themselves from the other collections we’ve seen thus far that have heavily favored embellishments.

Jonathan Saunders

The muted, calming color palatte shown at Jonathan Saunders was a welcome change from the dramatic detailing that’s been so popular on the runways for S/S 2010. The light, breezy fabrics and transparency come like a breath of fresh air and this collection is truly perfect for springtime. The models sported fresh-out-of-the-shower hair, which added to the overall ethereal aesthetic of the collection. Neon colors and linear designs were overlapped with frosty shades that created both a soft and modern, if not exciting, effect.

General Idea

Though General Idea’s S/S 2010 was mainly a black and white collection, hot pink and a variety of kaleidoscope prints made their way onto the runway. The collection featured a new take on one of this past season’s popular silhouettes – sleeveless and short sleeved tops and trenchcoats, sporting exaggerated rounded and pointy shoulders — as well as drop crotch pants and shorts, gladiator sandals, and jumpsuits. A daring favorite (definitely not for the faint of heart!) were the trench-turned-jumpsuits numbers worn by all the models at the end of the show.

Douglas Hannant

Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, served as the central inspiration for Douglas Hannant’s Spring 2010 collection, which heavily consisted of sculpted evening gowns and jersey dresses resembling more alluring versions of the toga. The location — the Plaza Hotel — and method of presentation — the dresses, quite literally, put up on pedestals — did well to compliment the elegance and caliber of Hannant’s delicate collection.

Kai Milla

Kai Milla’s first collection after taking a well-deserved break for motherhood is flirty and fun. New structures, beading and embellishments add an exciting touch to tried-and-true silhouettes — in doing so, Milla’s beautiful garments are modern and trendy, yet timeless enough that they won’t go out of style any time soon.
