While it’s a total bummer to say goodbye to summer, there’s still plenty of reason to celebrate the start of fall… when it comes to trends, that is! Now that the weather is starting to cool down, it’s time to embrace previously taboo textiles like wool – specifically tweed! Cropped tweed trousers may have been totally unwearable during the hotter summer months, but they could easily be your autumn go-to staple for making a chic statement at work that’s still comfortable and effortlessly cool. Pair with some chunky wedge booties for fall or your favorite printed flats, or elongate legs with some pointed toe pumps. These fresh-for-fall styles put a new spin on the traditionally “stuffy” material (so long to stiff jackets and suits!), but when wearing slouchier styles be sure to stay mindful of proportions by pairing with a more tailored or streamlined top to avoid looking sloppy!

Clean, understated, and menswear-inspired was Tibi’s new modus operandi for S/S 2012. The models strutted their stuff to the rock classic “The Destroyer” by The Kinks, with fresh faces and hair pulled back in low, no fuss ponytails. With a color palette of mint greens, mustard, teals, cobalt, and bright yellow, the line shouted spring excitement without the usual signature Tibi-style prints and florals.  Designed by Amy Smilovic and styled by blogger Elin Kling, the collection came equipped with long skirts and dresses, and menswear style pants and trousers in flowing chiffon, with the occasional leather accents. It shouted, and resounded effortlessly cool.

Diesel Black Gold

As the program exclaimed, it was “time to reflect” at the Diesel Black Gold ready-to-wear show yesterday at Pier 94. Light and reflection was an integral part of the show, from elements such as the dangling mirrored panels at the runway’s entrance to the glimmering, silver, “not-quite-positive if they’re leather or glass material” many of the pieces possessed. What you were sure of, though, was the essence of utility, beauty, and fluidity that emanated from each piece. Sophia Kokosalaki designed many of the outfits with accents of menswear-inspired sleekness, like clean jackets and crisp tailored shirts, but simultaneously fused them with elements of intense sparkle and light, and movement-seeking fabrics. With additions of hardware and spiked, mirrored pieces, the result was sleek and utilitarian, but attention grabbing and light-catching nonetheless. It was this combination of functionality, originality, and beauty that complimented Diesel’s put together yet undone mantra.

When it comes to summer style, I am loving the embellished tunic trend — not just for their elaborate, intricate details like embroidering and beading, but also for their versatility that allows you to rock them all summer long, day or night. Toni Francesc

Against a background of what looked like lasers and DNA strands, Toni Francesc sent down the runway his army of forward-thinking, progressive looks. Futurism might seem to have alraedy been exploited in the realm of fashion, but the designer’s vision of our stylish future was a little different; bleaker perhaps than what we’ve already seen and experienced. The collection was titled “Artificial Life” to invoke the combination of men and technology and the consequent human alienation. But in Toni’s new techno age, the factories are still emitting their toxic gases, hence the rusty tones and industrial elements. We also saw the new power shoulder – not padded, but complete with architectural flaps and splices. The new pockets do not conceal hands, but expose them, through an unzipped zipper.  The new ‘It‘ bag of the show? A briefcase, adorned with what seems to be remnants of  computer chips and metal gears.

Tibi

In a highly wearable collection, Amy Smilovic gave us a glimpse into what might become hot trends for fall. For one, sparkle: found on gowns, partly concealed under jackets, paired with print, tucked into tweed shorts. For another, draping: in bow ties on tweed pants, in gowns, in day dresses. Tibi also contributed its share of fall prints: a timely forest print, for instance, bewitching in a blend of darker tones.

For styling, Tibi also offered some valuable pointers — the belt that shaped many of the looks was a chicer version of the practical waist pouch. Smilovic might have put a lot on the table – sparkle, tweed, drapery, sheer, print – but she ties them together neatly with well-executed layering and impeccable cuts.

What if working in fashion was always as frenetic as fashion week? I would have to say “no thanks” in that case!

Here they are — the day 5 show reviews — it was a busy one!

Marc by Marc Jacobs:

Not surpsigingly it was an 80s-inspired collection, complete with oversized hipster eyeglasses, Buster Brown hats, colorful scarves, and great bags.

ChoCheng:

Colorful riding coats and pastel satin gowns strongly pervaded Cho Cheng’s debut at fashion week.

MaxAzria:

Darker than the BCBG collection, the signature line featured sculptural jackets, deconstructed tunics, leather and metallics that stated it’s time to think about the future of fashion.

Domenico Vacca:

Very Italian suits, sexy cuts, and visible applique lent its way to making a strong showing in the tents; fashion Italian style still rules!

Rodarte:

True to form, the Rodarte sisters expiremented with a mixture of inspirations, resulting in a distinctive, hand-crafted, yet couture aesthetic.

G Star:

Leathers, buckles, and creamy shades of grey invaded the G Star runway at Hammerstein ballroom; we only wish those drop-crotch pants weren’t so drop crotch — I have a feeling they would make me look even shorter than I already am!

Tibi:

Prints to covet, in silhouettes to love seemed to be Amy Smilovic’s moto for the fall 2009 collection.

Narciso Rodriquez:

A bit sombre, however signature Narciso sleekness prevailed; no wonder the First Lady prefers his collection! Loved the peachy pink dresses; definitely the highlight of the collection (let’s try not to think about the weird head gear, shall we?)
