Vintage glamour at its best– Giorgio Armani reworks the fascination with the Orient of yore and dramatic silhouettes of the 1930s to reveal a modern-day couture equivalent that will be sure to dazzle the eye for more than one season. A favorite detail from the collection is the winged sleeves, shoulders and pant hems, practically an ode to pagoda rooftops. Hence, the runway look of the day embodies those elements — just when I was thinking that a classic suit jacket could no longer be reworked into something fabulous, Armani proves me wrong! I love the hand fan print, and the curved skirt hemline gives it the proper couture touch.

If it’s going to be a look of the day from Valentino, you better believe it will be something in “Valentino Red!”

I held my breathe as the design transfer went from Signore Valentino to Alessandra Facchinetti and then rapidly onto Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli — what would be embraced in the designs besides the signature red color? How would the house that Valentino built be elavated upon, and not deviated from, by the new designers. So far, so good, I must say, and this dress from spring 2009 is a great example, in my opinion, if not an excellent example how the designers have embodied the sexy, sophisticated aesthetic of the brand, while moving it into a future-thinking model. The draping, the twists, the drama — very Italian, and very modern.

Out of the entire pre-fall 2009 collection, this was the “stunner”, the dress that I just couldn’t get out of my mind. It has an almost apron-like overlay to it, and defines the next wave of the “gradient” trend — rather two separate colors that have a thin line that blends the two for a second, then let’s each color own its own identity. And that, folks, is fashion perfection! In fact, I think this is something Michelle Obama may want to wear…it may not be inaugural material, but adequate for a state dinner…
