Rachel Antonoff Spring 2013 Backstage Beauty

by Julia DiNardo

The Theme: Inspired by the 1977 film “Powers of Ten,” Rachel Antonoff’s latest collection features an aerial view, a garden party, with landscapes, and the idea of a country club girl gone bad!
The Keys: Keri Blair for MAC Cosmetics, Jenny Balding for Cutler Salon, Candice Manacchio of CND.
The Color Palette: Clear, greys and whites, vibrant red, blues.
The Execution:  For makeup, Blair used cream blush to create a flush, while shearing out a blackened lip hue to manipulate it into more of a stain then a matte full-on color. With hair, Balding swept the left side under and back for a sleek, angular, shaved illusion, blow drying the hair to straighten it along with flat ironing the ends, while holding the look in place with Redken Fashion Works Hairspray.

For nails, Manacchio created three different looks, which took a team of six artists a total of 65 hours to make about 600 nails for the show! Secured with sticky tape or glue dots, the three styles of the nails mimicked the inspiration and actual pieces; a favorite was the white opaque nails with clear tips (to match her spring 2013 Bass brand collaboration jelly shoes), that had names of Antonoff’s friends and family written on them in Sharpie marker.

Fall 2012 Fashion Week: Backstage at Rachel Antonoff

by Julia DiNardo

If you love nails, you’ve got to check out how these nails by CND perfect match the fabrics! There were several nail looks done for the show, including the bluish “starry night” nail and a classir red, but this one was surely a favorite!

Jenny Balding for Redkencreated the double ponytail aesthetic, that was literally sewn to the hair with a plastic needle (so as to not hurt the models) and regular thread! Balding also used some gel and shine flash, then flat ironed the hair before pulling out the needle. Keri Blair for MAC Cosmetics mastered a look that was “cute, youthful, but not too cutesy; it is more sophisticated and romantic this season.” Blair did a “transparent smokey eye, how light reflecting on water would look” — genius! She stained the lip a deep berry shade with some MAC cream color base on the top. And– one of my favorite looks from the collection! Rachel Antonoff is a genuine and unique designer who stays true to her mission, also shows in an original and exciting way,  and deserves the utmost success and accolades for her vision! I love her designs, as well as her collab with shoe company Bass.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011: Pamella Roland, Rachel Antonoff, & Risto

by fashionpulse

Pamella Roland

Pamella Roland’s dream-like gowns incited a perpetual amount of “oohs” and “aahs” as each model confidently strutted up and down the catwalk at Lincoln Center, their egos boosted by the delightful gowns perfectly sanctioned to their long and lean bodies. Each look, from romantic deep red silks to cascading sequins and feathery embellishments demanded attention and respect as the luxurious materials used whooshed along the pristine white of the runway. Having drawn inspiration from Asian culture, Roland wished to combine the old with the new, the east with the west to create an ambiance of the best of both worlds in a timeless and elegant manner. Roland’s talent for gracious and charming evening wear has extended beyond the catwalk to dress such stars as Angelina Jolie, Hillary Swank, and Halle Berry for the red carpet.

Risto

Hosted at the Metropolitan Pavilion, Risto’s Fall 2011 Collection featured alluring patterns, sleek lines, and a taste for black and off-white edginess.  The bold yet understated under-liner featured on each model’s eyes added a degree of wispy innovation, with a contrast of a grunge-like elegance to each look. Noted for the collection’s strong showcase of sweaters, the entirety of the line held a sense of polished streetwear with burly, loose-fitting sweaters and pants, along with sleek, abstractly cut-out black dresses and pencil skirts paired with off-white sweaters layered over patterned collared long-sleeved shirts. Small embellishments to each look such as sheer black knee-high socks and an occasional large gold ear-clasp added a sense of novel originality and defined style.

Rachel Antonoff

One of Fashion Week’s hottest and most fun-loving events, Rachel Antonoff’s Fall 2011 Collection was featured at the nearby Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School’s gymnasium.  With the main theme as “The Dance” Antonoff (like Stefani did in her L.AM.B. Fall 2011 Runway Show) grouped her girls into six different themes — the “Wallflowers on Bleachers,” “Mean Girls on Bleachers,” “Dance Floor Girls,” “Table Girls,” “Band,” and “The Punch Spikers” – each schoolgirl dressed to the hilt, decked out in plaid mini skirts and dresses, high-waisted silk dresses and skirts, and some even wearing matching adorable white tights with whimsical knee embellishments in the cut-out of a black cat or arrow-pierced heart.

Rachel Antonoff and Yuna Yang Spring 2011 Collections

by fashionpulse

Rachel Antonoff

Rachel Antonoff’s Spring/Summer 2011 Presentation was truly something out of a storybook. Following the life of an adolescent girl through all of the most cherished childhood experiences, the collection was carefree and flirty.  In a palette largely made up of pastels, each item was enticingly feminine and doll-like in design. Fun prints, plaids, and fluid silk fabrics were paired beautifully with charming oxfords, creating a wonderfully inspired collection unlike any other!

Yuna Yang

Shaped by the era of the 1960’s housewife, Yuna Yang’s 2011 collection linked the traditionally feminine with the luxurious.  Each piece was sophisticated and elegant, yet by no means overdone. The line was made up of classic silhouettes, embellished with eye-catching sequins and black lace. Made in rich chiffons and silks, her showing included detailed draping and playful ruffles in shades of blue, pink, gray, black, and even ivory. This collection truly embodied the spirit of old Hollywood glamour!
